Socks For: Burning Man
Every year, as folks plan out what they’ll take with them to the playa, we see links back to us here at Sock Dreams. The desert means hot days and cold nights, so layering is essential. Though none of us have had the chance to go to Burning Man (yet!), we do know socks.
Bootsocks
To keep yourself safe from playa foot, your feet need to be kept from the alkali desert floor by socks and close-toed shoes. Several styles of our recycled cotton DreaM Stockings are terry-lined, making them cushy and absorbent bootsocks:

• Authentic Military Boot Socks •
• Dreamy Knee High Tube Socks •
• M Bootsocks •
If terry isn’t your thing, here are three more great styles, ranging from super thick wool to nice and thin recycled cotton.

• Coarse Knit Ski Socks •
• EG Smith Ribbed Bootsock •
• EG Eco Marled Bootsock •
But what about the fun and stripes and legwarmers? Well, we have our favourite recommendations for those too, but you’ll have to jump below the cut . . .
Leg Warmers
Stripes and sparkles dress up the total usefulness of legwarmers when it comes to layering. They roll up small in your bag, but make all the difference in keeping your legs comfy during those cold desert nights.

Arm Warmers
You can’t have your legs getting all the attention, but that’s what arm warmers are for—and they’re super nice for keeping off the chill when you’re not wearing much else. The first two are our favourite basics (with high cotton content for you fire dancers!), and then there are some fun, patterned options

What have we missed? What are your favourite socks and accessories for the playa?
6 soxy thoughts:
heat and crowds are a bad combination for me but I have always been intrigued by the stories I hear about Burning Man.
Same here. Like Comic Con, this is something on my maybe/hopefully/someday list that is a combo of overwhelming and awesome.
This will be my 6th burn coming up. I encourage anyone who can camp in the desert to go to Burning Man at least once. It is amazing, and a great way to show off the great socks I get at Sock Dreams.
My roommate and I both love sockdreams and are burners! This year we loved the tall stripey rainbow socks (we wore them on different days and felt like buddies), and she swore by her wrist warmers as it got colder. I wear a heavy style combat boot, so I was very grateful for big warm legwarmers I could throw on for added warmth that DIDN”T require taking off the boots. I would love more tights that were specifically low-cut around the hips to wear during the daytime.
Thanks!

Every time I’ve gone to BM about a third to half of my clothing bag is taken up by my sockdreams favorites. I highly recommend the following:
DAYTIME:
Mostly I wore anklets under sneakers or boots because of the heat. I don’t think I can handle anything else, but if I had to choose a daytime item I’d recommend the Bella Codori tights – soft and gorgeous and I suspect not very stuffy at all. Just don’t snag them.
Oh yes, I wore pastel rainbows during the day once and while I think they are discontinued the texture and heat factor is identical to the DreaM Stockings Neapolitan Stripes and all the “knees” OTKs. Definitely manageable and so so cute.
NIGHT TIME
- Super Dreamies: A MUST!!! Yes, they are not as splashy color-wise as some of the other options, but they are soft and warm and long enough to wear with a short skirt and still not freeze your butt off. I recommend bringing a pair to sleep in (that you ONLY wear for that purpose so they stay clean and relatively dust free) and additional pair to wear with skirts.
- Long Cuffables – they are long, warm, scrunch wonderfully for the warmer moments of the night, and come in a million bright colors. Plus they are so affordable who cares if you destroy them? I wore my black ones layered with other stuff. One neat look is to have a longer warmer sock base such as a Cuffable, and some crocheted OTK on top, such as the Bella Crochet Trouser sock or the Crochet Lover OTKs. An alternative is to do the reverse — wear a crochet or striped pair of tights, then put on a pair of Scrunchables on top to keep you warm.
Basically layering is the way to go for the night, regardless of which exact sock you choose. Not only does this give you extra color and texture, thus more pizzaz, but it allows you to roll down the outermost layer when you are dancing and thus feel quite hot and then roll them back up when you are walking around, i.e. freezing.
- Cotton tights. I LOVE the Cronert Tights in petrol – bright and so so comfy and soft. Bring several pairs of tights. I am against nylon because of snagging and stuffiness but sock dreams have many cotton options.
IN BETWEEN/ MISC.
For those times where it’s neither too hot nor too cold but you suspect that soon it will become one or the other, I recommend leg warmers.
Leg warmer have the added advantage of not having a foot thus can be worn with sandals. They can also be scrunched and used as ARM warmers. They can be slid up and down you legs for warmth where it is most needed (dont get anything that fits too tight though). They can also be tied around your neck as a scarf. Or used as a last resort dust mask. A very multi-purpose item indeed.
I didn’t go to BM this year but instead actually visited Portland with my boyfriend and of course had to stop by the sockdreams store and add to my collection of 100+ socks from them. I got the Ribbed Knit Leg Warmers and I think those would make a great BM sock that would work for all the uses mentioned above.
ARMS:
Arm warmers arm warmer arm warmers. And gloves. I love the chenille arm warmers because of their crazy luxurious softness. While at BM people tend to wwwelop a strong penchant for touching soft textures so having an ultra soft item on you is sure to bring joy to you and those around you. I also once brought the Chevron sleeves which ended up too tight for me but others might find their light texture and color useful. Your hands do get very very very cold so something warm for your wrists and fingers is recommended. Even a fingerless glove will make a huge difference.
Finally, if you have one of those $60 angora socks keep in mind that snagging and ruining of clothes is common at BM and you don’t want to spoil your time by worrying about your expressive clothing items. Playa dust washes off and I never had the play ruin a single pair of my socks but that’s because I never wore anything too gentle or too expensive. The options above should hold up quite well.
