Socks For: Over Jeans, Under Boots
A popular look that we’ve been seeing and being asked about lately are taller socks that are stretchy enough to go over skinny jeans and scrunch down under knee high and midcalf boots. Regular slouch socks just don’t cut it, they’re often too short to get the right amount of scrunch going above the boot.
Of course, the first thing we thought of were the Harajuku Super Loose. I know I talk about them all the time on the Sock Journal, but they’re a really versatile sock! And they’ve got enough stretch and height to work well over trousers and under boots.
Another two styles that popped into our heads right away when brainstorming socks for this look were the Ribbed M Stockings and the Long Cuffable Scrunchables. They’ve both got a lot of length (the Ribbed M are over 45 inches!) and wonderful ribbing that keeps them where you scrunch them. I also like that they’re thick enough that any weird wrinkles that happen from pulling them up over your jeans won’t show.
If you want an extra kick of warmth, the Cronert Ribbed Wool OTK are the perfect option. They’re not fond of staying up on their own anyhow, so wearing them over trousers and under boots is what they’re made for!
Shorter styles and some non-sock options after the jump and a couple tips for finding just the right socks for rocking this look!
Not everybody wants to rock tall boots, so what socks give the right amount of scrunch above mid-calf styles? We’ve got three that are just about perfect:
• Coarse Knit Knee High •
• Bess Cashmere Slouch Rib Knee Sock •
• Longer Thicker Slouch Socks •
The key to finding the right sock height for your slouching needs is to choose a style one coverage level taller than where you want the scrunched sock to end up. So, if you want socks scrunched below your knee to midcalf, choose knee highs that cuff, or look for the phrase “knee socks”. Those couple of extra inches will give you just the right amount of extra scrunch. And if you want your socks to scrunch to the knee and above, go for over the knee and thigh high styles.
Thicker socks work best, but if you get a long enough sock, like the Super Ms, then there will be enough scrunch to hide any wrinkles in the jeans underneath.
And it’s not just socks that can help you get this look. I personally think it’s easiest to achieve with leg warmers! My favourite style for this are the Super Long Ribbed Leg Warmers. They’re totally stretchy enough to go over pants, and that way you can still wear your favourite socks while rocking this look.
So, have you been swept up by the scrunched socks over jeans, under boots look? It’s definitely a wonderfully warm option for winter and we’re of course pretty stoked that showing off some slouchy socks is catching on. J

I know I should be obsessing over the socks….but the last pair of boots in the 3rd photo spread… Any idea where I could find them?

@Olivia & @Unseelie Pixie—This is probably one of my favourite layering combos in winter! So warm!! I tend to go for legwarmers over trousers and under boots because they let me sneak an extra layer of sock in to keep even warmer.

That look was actually what brought me to your website! I have soccer-player calves, and couldn’t find any thing that went high enough and would fit over jean-clad calves. But I found you guys, and now I’m all set!
Love the socks and have several pairs in this post. I am curious about the boots in the first picture. I love your store because you guys give all the info so us girls with thick calves can always find the perfect pair of lovely socks that fit just right. Now I just have to find the perfect pair of knee high boots that will fit.
@Anne & @Darcy—I’ll find out what shoes those are! We understand obsessing over shoes equally with socks and Darcy, I know that those boots were particularly wonderful for larger calves.
@Shannon R—Aw, that is awesome to hear!
Wow! I cannot believe I never saw the Harajuku Super Loose!!! Those are so awesome and I love the over the boot look too! I must get a pair of them now! Every winter my paychecks get smaller… but my sock drawers keep expanding! Keep up the awesome tips and great socks to purchase too!

I love your site and love your socks but was wondering about the boots in the picture with the grey knee socks. Who makes them and where can I get a pair of them?
@Anne—Those lovely, large-eyelet boots are by Bronx and are the Quinta Eyelet boot! We don’t know if they’re still available though.

@Darcy—Though we’re not certain if the boots in the first picture with the Ivory Harajuku Super Loose are made any longer, they’re from Duo Boots, where you can look for boots based on calf size! Which sounds just like what you’re looking for in general.

Thank you so much for this info. I just might have my first pair of fantastic boots finally! Luckily I already have lots of great socks to go with.

Ooooh I’m definitely inspired and the photos are gorgeous as always! I have a question about the over the knee with jeans underneath look. I once (like 4-5 years ago) tried the Super Ms in light pink and they were too restrictive on my 17-18in thighs. I can’t imagine that that style would stretch enough to go over jeans, but may be they’ve changed over the years? Or may be different shades give slightly different stretch? Also for the scrunched- above- a-midcalf-boot look I also recommend the O Marled (if your boots have enough room in the foot to accomodate this thicker style) as they are fabulous scrunchers.

Just so you all know… if you have not as of yet purchased any of the Harajuku Super Loose Socks… you are simply missing out! I got mine today and they are by far the softest and cutest socks I have purchased yet. Brenna, I will be purchasing more for sure… you were so right… they are very addictive! I now have to get my boots to go with them too!

@Darcy—Yay! Fantastic boots for all!
@Sena—What I like about the socks over pants thing is that the socks don’t need to go up over your thighs, necessarily. So a lot of lovely, scrunchy OTKs that just don’t work well as OTKs for some legs (or have to be double-cuffed) can rock it scrunched down below the knee with shorter boots. According to the Sizing Info, the latest batch of Super M’s stretch to about 20-21 inches, so they should do you fine.
@Sharon—I warned you! Watch out for when you learn that the foot is thin enough you can wear two pair with winter shoes.

@Marshal—That is some serious layering! The best way to keep warm is with lots of layers like that, to trap warm air.
We’re so glad you’re digging the garters and Harajuku Super Loose.

Oooh, unrelated question but speaking of warmth – I just saw the Look from London Shaggy striped leggings and Im wondering if you might be getting these in solid colors eventually? I love warm socks with some texture and fuzz!
November 18th, 2011 at 4:42 pm
@Sena—I don’t believe that Look From London offers the Shaggy Stripe Legging in solid colours.
You may dig the Cotton Legging with Microfiber Cuff (http://www.sockdreams.com/products/cotton-legging-with-microfiber-cuff). Sooo cozy and soft and super warm. Not quite the same, but if you like fuzzy and warm, they may do the trick.
