I used my standing mixer, yes (a KitchenAid), with the paddle attachment (not the whisk and not the dough hook, the other one). I wasn’t dyeing socks (it was a scarf) but I didn’t have any issues with tangling.

@Kandice, you are a GENIUS! So, you used your standing mixer? With what attachment (it seems like the socks might get tangly)?

I have, when dyeing things in the past, thrown them in my mixer on low speed so I didn’t have to agitate them the whole time. It worked great as long as I had enough water/dye to keep the item submerged (although I did have to throw a towel over the mixer to keep it from splattering).

awesome! now all I want to do is go home and whip up a nice batch of dye….
