If you are into costuming or cosplay you know that the right accessories can help pull your outfit together. Say, for example, you are obsessed with a certain series of books about teenage wizards. Coordinating our sorcerer’s socks and sleeves with your school clothes can take your costume from meh, to magical.
The right touch can transport you to other worlds. With some great socks and a little imagination you can find your self in a broken metropolis, a fairy woodland, an anime story-line, or somewhere over the rainbow.
If you are extra adventurous, you can also create costume pieces by modifying your accessories. And in that vein, we are going to introduce a new feature here at Sock Dreams: Cosplay Corner. Coming in January we will be bringing to you tips, tricks, and tutorials on how to take your accessories to the next level. We will have cosplay ideas for the beginner as well as for the more adventurous. We also know from experience just how creative you can be, and we are really looking forward to your ideas, suggestions, and feedback.
Stay tuned dreamers. We will see you in another world.
Well, that title may be a bit melodramatic. It is sad though that our event season has come to a close. We won’t be traveling the wild roads of the Con Circuit until March of next year.
Not to worry though. We are not abandoning our favorite fellow fanatics of comics, sci-fi, pop culture, and all things geek. We’ve got something special in store.
For the next few months we will be turning our events page into a cosplay corner. We’ll have some neat tips and tricks to turn your ordinary stockings into some killer cosplay pieces. So keep an eye out. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve got in store.
Last month we announced our new monthly contest, Dreamer Dress Up. Our first challenge to you was to create a Halloween costume which featured some of our socks, or accessories. We had a lot of amazing entries. They were so good, in fact, that we had to share our ten finalists with all of you!
These first three finalists are looking spectacular in shades of red. Malia McCollister, a former ballet dancer, used the Puffy Chiffon Mini Petticoat to give her Firebird costume the right flare. Elizabeth Hedrick used tons of layers to make her pirate queen costume come alive, including a Mid-Length Petticoat, Ruffle Striped OTKs, and Flapper Buttoned Sock Garters. Yoko Mizuhara, our next finalist, modified her Solid Opaque Thigh Highs for her Bombshell Harley Quinn costume, and is a huge advocate of It Stays! Body Adhesive.
Our next two finalists are rocking the steam-punk look. Brianna Clarke is ready for a Victorian Air Ship ride in her Solid Over the Knee Stockings and her Extra Long Simply Adjustable Sock Garters. Amy Robinson made some creative edits to her Solid Opaque Thigh Highs, which she keeps held high with her Double Grip Clips.
We loved Cindy Dulay’s portrayal of Mary Sanderson, the middle sister from the movie Hocus Pocus. She is using the plus sized Striped Over the Knee stockings to keep her witchy legs warm. And speaking of needing to stay warm, our next entrant, known only as Pixi Faery, is staying snuggley by layering rust colored Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks and Dark Brown Knees.
And now for our three winners, who will each receive a $30 Sock Dreams Gift Card!
In her portrayal of the Queen of the Rainbow Goblins, Joyce Churchia created her own sleeves using Rainbow Knee High socks and Cotton Overknees, and completed her outfit with Vertical Rainbow Fishnet Tights. Kathleen Weaver is clearly excited about her Peter Pan costume, and so were we! She is wearing the ever popular Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks in olive. Our final winner, and perhaps our favorite, is Sara Bielaczyc. How adorable is she in her purple Chevron Sleeves and green and plum Super Stripe Knee Highs?
We want to congratulate all of our finalists. And to do that, we decided to throw in a bonus. We are giving each of them 10% off their next purchase! Feeling a bit jealous? For those of you who do not know, we sponsored a fantastic cosplay contest in The Mary Sue‘s Geek Girl Headquarters at the New York Comic Con this past weekend. The time has finally come to pick the winners! Check out the finalists on The Mary Sue’s Twitter, or on their web page and cast your vote for your favorite. The choices are tough and the competition is fierce, so make your vote count.
The grand prize winner of the contest will get an amazing prize package from us including, socks, leg warmers, sock glue, the world’s best water bottle, stickers, buttons, not to mention a $50 gift card. Three runners up will also get gift cards.
If you missed out on the action and are itching to show off your socks in outfit related contests, don’t fret. We’ve got several competitions lined up in the coming months with our new Dreamer Dress Up feature. Just sign up for our newsletter and we’ll keep you posted on how you can be a winner too!
As fabulous as it can be to have elaborate and unique costumes, there is something really fun about going for one of the traditional stand-bys. Especially great if you don’t know whether or not you’ll be going out, these classics are things that can easily melt right back into your everyday wardrobe when the holiday is over.
Whether you go the sultry, skin-tight Batman villain route or keep it fuzzy and cozy, a good cat just needs ears, paws and a tail. The ears are up to you, but the rest of it can be found by searching within Solid for your kitty colour. The Harajuku Arm Warmers and Cotton Slouches are perfect paws (and come in a lot of colours) and for a tail, just slip one O Basic inside another and pin it where tails go!
We have a lot of perfectly pirate-y styles, but a great pairing with eye patch, kerchief and weather-worn rags are stripes in black and red (and the Curvy Stripes Knee High is a great style that fits lots of folks!) and the Wood Knee Highs in your choice of Oak or Mahogany (I like to think Mahogany is a good choice for the pirate with classic taste). And, if you’re a girly pirate lass, the Shimmer Organza Knee Length Petticoat is just the thing to fluff out those full skirts.
The days of throwing a sheet with eyeholes over your head is long gone, but if you want to be a ghost it’s still just as easy. Start with a white outfit—you know, all those outfit pieces you love, but never wear because what if they stain?! Then figure out when your ghost is from and add some solid white accessories!
Speaking of spooky spirits, have you seen our seasonal sticker for this Halloween? Be sure to ask for it when you order, we want to make sure anyone who wants is haunted by our lovely logo lady.
So there’s some places to start, if you are still mulling the question of “costume or not?” And we’ve even got some more ideas from a couple years ago, socks that are a costume and socks that make a costume! Of course, this is our favourite time of year, so if you’re looking for just the thing to make your look, drop us a line and we’ll happily help you out.
