Nestled in a turn of the century house in the historic Sellwood neighborhood, recessed from busy 13th street just off of SE Nahalem is the Sock Dreams brick and mortar store. Here, you’ll find many of the items we sell on our online store, as well as several other shop exclusive styles. People as far away as Eastern Europe have been known to make pilgrimages to the shop, while visiting the Portland area, but the busiest time for our little shop is always the Holidays.
From Black Friday until almost the New Year, our shop is a bustle with folks getting warm, cozy, kitschy, fashionable, soft, funny and cute socks, tights and other accessories for their loved ones. The Sock Dreams shop team is four people strong and they do their best to help our customers find the perfect gift.
Pictured here, is our shop crew wearing some of their favorite socks.
First up is Rose, who has been working with us since August 2012 and, like many of us, has noticed a drastic change in her wardrobe-Waking up each morning and planning a whole outfit around my socks is awesome. Best dress code ever. Socks Dreams has filled me with so much confidence in my body/legs that I went from wearing a dress or skirt once a year to weddings to wearing them every day.
Rose is wearing the Sock It To me Dinomite knee high- I’m the weird one; I’ll just start with that. Every day I layer and mash weird colors together to make my personality jump out of my socks.
Rose spends much of her time at the shop picking out shop exclusives and helping customers.
In terms of tips on shopping for the holidays- Shop early! We have a few select holiday styles that are shop exclusive and they will be going fast.
Next is Gelsey, the Assistant Shop Manager, Gelsey has been with Sock Dreams since August 2010.
When asked what her favorite part of working here is- Hands down: the people. I love being friends with all of my coworkers. Best. Coworkers. Ever.
Gelsey wears Sock Dreams own brand of cotton slouch sock- I like wearing my socks scrunched down around mid-calf high boots, and I love the Cotton Slouch Socks because they actually hold their slouch rather than slowly sliding down to the bottom of my foot during the day.
Her tip for holiday shopping- The store and web site sometimes have different items. If you’re coming in for something you saw on the web site, make sure to call ahead so we can hold it at the shop for you.
Then there’s Laurel, our vivacious Shop Manger. Laurel has worked for Socks Dreams since August of 2008 and also loves all her co-workers.
Laurel is wearing a brand that is new to Sock Dreams, and we are all totally in love with- I really like the Sockwell compression knee highs because I’m on my feet a lot. They stay up great without being too tight at the top. They have a nice, cushy foot that’s great for boots and a toe seam that’s not very noticeable. They’re warm, they’re cute, and I’ve worn and washed them several times and they hardly show any wear. I especially like them when I go to the Timbers game and stand on cold concrete for 90+ minutes. Go Timbers! The Timbers being Portland’s pro soccer team.
We’re also part of a fantastic local network of shops where you can earn points to gain rewards- Sock Dreams is proud to be a part of the Supportland network. With Supportland, the customer has one card (or a phone app) that they can use at a ton of rad locally-owned businesses to earn rewards. With more businesses joining the network all the time, you can earn points every time you shop, and then turn around and use those points for coupons, gift cards, and other free stuff!
Last, but by no means least, is our newest shop employee Sabrina! Sabrina has been with us since July of this year and is a fantastic addition.
Her favorite part of working at Sock Dreams, so far, is- Helping customers find the perfect pair of socks!
Sabrina wears another house brand favorite, the O Dreamy’s in Heliotrope- They’re super soft, have a great texture and are subtle, yet visually interesting.
Sabrina’s holiday shopping tip- When it comes to returns, I would suggest calling us at the shop with any questions regarding what is acceptable for refund/ exchange. Also, I would suggest asking about a certain pattern/design they may not see in the store. We keep track of all customer product requests and try to meet them when placing orders for future stock.
These ladies work really hard to make your shopping experience effortless; they’re always happy to help you find the perfect thing. If you’re in the Portland area, come on by and say hello!
We’re just getting into the best time of year- sock season! As we move into our busiest time of year, we’d like to introduce you to the hard working Sock Dreams teams who will be processing, pulling, shipping, creating ads and working in our shop.
Our first department spotlight is our customer service department. These ladies are in first thing in the morning printing orders, answering your phone calls and emails.
Pictured here, in their favorite Sock Dreams socks, are Emily, Edelweiss, Lucy and Nina.
Emily has been working at Sock Dreams, in Customer Service, since February 2012- just in time for Sock Dreams to be her Valentine.
Emily’s favorite part of working here is: Sharing an office with the silliest people I’ve ever met, selling fabulous products to customers in between spontaneous bursts of laughter. We have so much fun here it doesn’t really seem like work most of the time, especially when the office dogs come to visit for cuddles.
Emily is sporting the Dreamer Jacquard Ripple OTK in purples, these are her favorites because: Purple! Also I have a nerdy fascination with the history of the Jacquard looming process. The punch cards that were used in the original old timey looms were some of the first operating sequences that were a precursor to computer programming.
Edelweiss, who runs our wholesale (yes! Sock Dreams wholesales our brand!) has been working at Sock Dreams since 2007. She is wearing the extraordinarily longer thigh highs; she loves these socks because: they are so unusually long, come in great colors and they stay up on my legs even while riding my bike. No need to wear tights!
Those of you who might be interested in wholesale, we now offer it year round. A tip from Edelweiss: Because we now wholesale our socks all year long, be sure to order early as our socks sell out fast!
Next up is Lucy, our resident My Little Pony collector and general sweetheart. Lucy was hired at the same time as Emily and loves working at Sock Dreams because: It’s a very accepting company. No one cares that my hair is purple, and I’m actually encouraged to wear fun socks and have my own style.
Lucy is wearing the Harvest Rainbow Extraordinaries: The Extraordinary THs are the first thigh highs I found that fit my curvy thighs comfortably, and since I love rainbows, the Harvest Rainbows are an obvious choice for me.
The fearless leader of Sock Dreams customer service team is Nina who is also wearing the Extraordinarily Longer Striped Thigh Highs in her trademark black and plum. Nina loves these socks because: I love tall socks and I love striped socks, so our house brand of Extraordinarily Longer Striped Thigh Highs is a perfect match made in sock heaven!
Nina has been working at Sock Dreams for 2 years and loves- Keeping the feet of the world fashionable and cozy…one foot at a time!
A few tips from the Customer Service department regarding successful holiday ordering:
We provide a Return Authorization Form on the back of all our invoices, with all the basic information about returns. All you have to do is fill the form out, and send your items our way!
If you receive a damaged item, an item you didn’t order, or are missing an item, give us a call or email right away, and we’ll get you taken care of.
If you ever have any questions or concerns about your order, please don’t hesitate to shoot us an e-mail or give us a call! It is our goal to help resolve any issues in the easiest and most pain-free manner possible!
If you’re returning something, pretty please make sure it’s clean and pet hair free and you’ve filled out the authorization form on the back of the order invoice; it makes processing items so much easier and more pleasant.
Don’t forget to say hello occasionally when everything goes right. During really stressful times nothing keeps us motivated like getting a positive or silly email from a happy customer.
Sock Dreamers are a dedicated bunch! People often work here for many years and learn many different positions in the sock world. From time to time, however, someone will leave us to follow their own dreams in the wide, wild world. That’s when we get to hire brand new Sock Dreamers, which we have just had the pleasure of doing!
One of the rites of passage for any new Dreamer is learning to fold socks. All of our house-brand Dream Stockings and Dreamer Socks have a different kind of fold, and it’s important for new employees to learn them all.
The end product is described by our Stock Room manager and resident blogstress, the loverly Miss Brenna, as a “sock brick”: no loose ends popping out, heel and toes tucked into the folds, with a pleasing aesthetic in every pair.
Class was conducted today for our new Dreamers. A variety of different socks were paraded through our Project Room, with labels, bits of yarn, and tagging guns to boot– all for the purposes of beginning to learn the product in a hands-on way!
Like many of you, we sometimes feel the strain of a never-ending array of new sites to participate in. But Pinterest has caught our eye, it is full of pretty pictures and inspiration… so we’ve dipped our toes into their pool and are having fun, not only adding pictures of our favorite socks, but also shots of our critters, stuff we no longer carry, people we miss, comparison shots, some of our fun invoice drawings and, of course, things that simply inspire us. This is just the beginning… Do you Pinterest?
We clearly love socks here, but some socks (and accessories!) we love more than others. “Dreamers Recommend” highlights the current favorite style of our Sock Dreamers.
Dreamer names: Jess & Rosalind
Current favourite style: Double Grip Clips (they both love these and rock them in different ways and have even made a gallery of Double Grip Clip uses on our Facebook!)
Did you like this item when we first started carrying it, or did you hate it and grow to love it?
Jess: I was intrigued by a garter style that had no waistband and no leg-pinching tightness, but wasn’t quite sure how to use them. I noted the product description’s caveat about “skirt lifters,” though, and tucked it away in the back of my mind until the day I wore a floor-length skirt to work. The skirt kept getting caught in the wheels of my chair all morning, until finally I broke down and bought two pairs of black clips from our warehouse stock to serve as skirt lifters out of sheer necessity. The effect was instantly AWESOME, both for convenience and style, and I’ve been using them on all of my longer skirts since then!
Rosalind: I was immediately intrigued by the open-ended nature of their design, but after I got a pair it took me a while to figure out the best way to use them.
What is the best thing about this particular style?
Jess: They’re so versatile! They add a visual lure to even the plainest of black skirts, and you can mix and match clip colors, adjust the length of the clips, or layer several lifts at once for volume. I especially love just lifting the front of my skirts (so I can show off my socks!) and letting them fall naturally in the back. I’ve also used these clips as regular garters to hold up my Super Long Ribbed Leg Warmers, and a single clip will stylishly hold a cardigan closed (thanks for the tip, Laurel!). They’re handy to have around!
Rosalind: They’re clever, and possibly a little bit sneaky. When worn with a short skirt or shorts, they peek out to lend that old fashioned garter belt look, but they’re much more simple, versatile, and hot weather friendly than a real garter belt.
How’s the fit?
Jess: These aren’t technically “fitted,” but the adjustable length is really useful. If I’m wearing a longer top, I’ll lengthen the clips’ elastic fully so they’ll still show; if I want a higher skirt lift, I shorten the clips up a couple inches. The elastic is stretchy enough to have a bit of give (so they won’t tear your skirts if they get caught on something), but won’t stretch out unnecessarily.
Rosalind: They don’t need to go around any part of you, so they can fit anyone. Their length is adjustable for different sock heights. Sometimes if I wear them with really tall socks they’re a little long, even at their shortest, but I just fold the sock over at the top to get the right height.
Who would you recommend this style for?
Jess: Everyone! They’re great for costumes (Victorian, steampunk, Ren Faire, etc.), but they’ve already become a staple to my everyday aesthetic, as the Dreamers can attest. They’d be especially useful to anyone who’s looking to avoid the possible pinch of a garter belt, or someone who’d rather have their garter clips on the sides instead of the backs of their legs—you can clip these anywhere, so they’re a perfect starter-garter!
Rosalind: Anyone who is looking for a good anti-gravity wwwice for stockings, or whatever else you can think of holding up or together with them.
Jess: If you’re looking to add some texture, volume, and flair to your wardrobe, or if you want to show off your socks even in your longest skirt, pick up a pair or two of Double Grip Clips! You won’t regret it.
Rosalind: My favourite use of them is with pocketed skirts/shorts/dresses. That way you can clip them to the pocket underneath. Of course, if you have a very loose or stretchy waistband, you might want to try this out at home before you risk losing your pants in public. More secure waistbands, such as on jean skirts or shorts are best.
