Last week we talked about the ZAP! Category and why a style goes away. You’d think, since we deal with this regularly (and some of us have to make the “this needs to go” decisions), Dreamers wouldn’t feel the pangs of loss as sharply when a style goes ZAP! But we do!
I asked my fellow Dreamers what socks they have and love, that we don’t carry any longer and they were quick to reply! Some are worn with the years, some are perfectly preserved (and worn only on special occasions), but all are styles we dearly miss. I bet a lot of your long-gone favourites are some of these too . . .
Old O Dreamy and Super Dreamy colours
Sure, we still sell the O Dreamy and Super Dreamy styles. But, as many of you know, the yarn is as difficult to get as a dragon’s hoard and eventually a colour runs out and that’s the last we see of it. Niq has expressed before that the Dreamy style is her personal favourite, and her collection of them is mighty!
The yarn used to be a bit more slubby back in the day too, as you can see in the original Bark Super Dreamy she’s layered under the old Antique O Dreamy. On the right are old product shots of the Hibiscus, Autumn and Classic colours. Old yarn or new, this style does just get softer and better with each wash.
Earlene Plaid Cat Socks (and other B.Ella cute crews)
For the style that Dreamer Lucy picked as her long-gone favourite, our image Archives sadly failed me. Somehow we no longer have images of this kinda-rustic, kinda-wooly, VERY comfortable crew. That’s just like cats, to tell the truth, off into the shadows! So I’ve added old images of the Susan (a merino blend with bold flowers) and the June (a classic picnic blanket check) on the right, so they all generally represent B.Ella crews lost and gone.
It’s not just these styles from B.Ella that has sadly but swiftly passed through our hands. Crews and ankle styles are clearly where B.Ella loves to play, they so regularly introduce new styles each season and only the strongest survive. It’s a sock-eat-sock world out there. Luckily, B.Ella offers several tried and true styles we can count on to keep on keeping on (even if their colours cycle out to new hues).
Shaggy Stripe Leggings
The nubbly, furry texture of these leggings definitely split opinion. You either loved them (like Dreamer Nina in the Black & Grey below), or you were Rather Not Into It. With decent stretch and good basic colours they did well, but they had two flaws.
We weren’t able to get them as regularly as we needed from their supplier, which is always frustrating, but these fabulously fuzzy leggings also were prone to holes at the crotch seams. That double whammy meant a sad goodbye, even though the folks who loved them (like Nina) don’t mind a bit their structural instability, because nowadays all we currently have to offer are fleece-lined styles and mere touches of microfiber fuzzies.
MP Coarse Knit Knee Highs
We mostly said goodbye to the MP brand about two years ago. They’re an expensive and difficult to import style, though we still carry some of their Cotton-Lined Wool Tights. But the gem in the MP crown was the Coarse Knit Knee Highs (and, before that, the shorter Coarse Knit Ski Socks). Thick, but not too thick, with a sweater-like rib that made them the ultimate in cozy, Dreamer Rosalind loved them so much that she collected four pairs before they went away forever.
I particularly love that she’s got a hat that matches their grey marl, it means the yarn is out there somewhere, just waiting to be made into socks we can easily carry! None of our warm, ribbed styles really compare, even the Ribbed Wool OTK isn’t as perfectly thick a sock.
At-Cross OTK and Kalana Wool Tights
This is actually another MP style—not as madly loved as the Coarse Knit, but a stellar example of the lovely over the knee socks from MP often offered. Deeply textural, and with a cuff that Dreamer Rachel loves because it’s the same inside and outside (allowing her to make them OTKs or thigh highs on her shorter inseam), there’s nothing that quite compares, though the Textured Cable Acrylic OTK come close, particularly in cuff. The Cronert cotton overknee styles also are similar. Even though they have a doubled cuff the ribbing is the same inside and out, making them quite cuffable!
But it wasn’t just the OTKs that Rachel was reminiscing about, she was also wearing the gorgeous Kalana Wool tights from B.Ella, which you can see peeks of around (and through!) her socks. One of those “crochet-style” tights, the Kalana were a lot like the Patricia Merino Crochet Tights in fiber and style, but with a gorgeous band detail at the thigh that we rarely see (though the ZAP!-ed Samara have a similar look). Together with the also mourned MP OTK, it’s a pair for the ages.
Surprise Rib OTK
We never did quite figure out what the surprise was in Ozone’s Surprise Rib OTK. Was it that “Khaki” was actually a brilliant green? Or the “Prune” had more warmth and gorgeousness than its name implied? Most likely the name came from the way the ribs opened up on these socks, creating a depth of texture that took you from “eh” to “OH!” Dreamer Stephanie had little hesitation when choosing this as her favourite long-gone style and regretted not getting more than one colour (though we may have been down to just “Khaki” and “Prune” when she first started with us).
Nowadays, Ozone seems to be focusing more on shorter styles and there’s nothing quite like the Surprise Rib OTK out there, though the Sweater Style Over the Knee has the same surprise effect when the ribbing opens up as you put them on.
Coyote Knee Highs
Nowadays we mostly only offer RockNSocks’ OTK and midcalf styles, with just the Eleggua Knee High representing that coverage level. But, once upon a time, there were several knee highs from RockNSocks available, like Dreamer Tori’s pick: the Coyote Knee High! And she isn’t alone in her devotion, another Dreamer came up as I was getting the snap below and when they learned it was for the “socks we miss” post they were crushed—turns out the Coyote Knee High were a favourite of theirs too and they didn’t realise that style had been gone for some time.
For fuller legs, a RockNSocks OTK is more like a knee sock, but that’s still a far cry from the sweet spot of “knee high.” Luckily, our Dreamer Socks have come out with more knee high options to fill that need for an eco-friendly, reclaimed fiber knee high that fits just right.
Oh Stance. You make such fun styles, but they’re so seasonal! Here for a year (or less) then gone. Dreamer Sabrina’s pick, the Galacticat Midcalves, were one we almost missed out offering online, and their time with us was far too short (they were pretty popular with everyone, it seemed). Cats. IN. SPACE. What else could we add to make them better? Sabrina’s pair is well loved and worn, because again: cats in space.
What can even compare? Oh, how about Grumpy Cat Grumpy Space Leggings? Another favourite that we didn’t get for very long were called “Plasticism” (the ways people get around directly referencing Mondrian’s designs are kind of great), but they live again from another supplier, the Abstract Rhythms Midcalf from Soxks. Stance has wonderfully unique socks, so it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on their page so you don’t miss any of the seasonal styles. Who knows what they’ll make that might top GALACTICAT?!
US Arm Warmers
Marls, stripes and solids, the lightweight yet warm US Arm Warmers (made, naturally, in the USA) were a basic-basic. Simple, tube style sleeves with a finished hole for the thumb, they were an inexpensive but favourite layer for Dreamer Rae.
There’s no direct equivalent to these old mitt-style arm warmers, the Harajuku Arm Warmers are cozy in the same way, but too short. The Una arm warmers are as long, but a totally different material. And neither have that sort of rustic, sort of punk (rustic punk, can that be a thing?) overall look.
But that’s how it goes. A style goes away and leaves as space that can’t always be filled in quite the same way. However, give anything enough time and something even better may come along that more than fills the space, it covers and landscapes it!
We used to have a LOT of November birthdays. I want to say it was like 20% of our very small staff seemed to have a birthday this month, which added a lot of cake and joy into one of our busiest seasons.
One of my favourite things about Rachel is that she brings some of the most ace props when modelling socks. She’s another one of the Dreamers with an almost supernatural ability to match and complement colours across an outfit and I end up clapping my hands gleefully when I see how she’s put the socks I need to shoot to work!
Rachel’s favourites are a regular favourite for a lot of us, and for good reason. She says:
My current favorite socks are the O Dreamy Stockings. They’re warm, comfortable, and the yarns are always so beautiful. Plus they’re easy to wear with lots of different outfits due to all of the colors contained in just one sock. They’re always at the top of my OTK sock drawer.
I love that she paired the Shorty Scrunchable Warmers in Teal with these. The jewel tones of the Shorty Scrunchables is a perfect foil to the secret vividness of the dark marls of the O Dreamy in Nebula.
Stephanie knew exactly what her favourite socks were: slipper and house socks, the cosiest of them all! She says:
Most important criteria for a favorite sock: coziness. I can dig dressing up socks for daytime wear, but if it isn’t soft, squishy, and ultimately made for lounging, it will sit at the bottom of my drawer. My favorites right now are the Lumberjack Fleece Knee Highs, but basically anything from Polar Feet is great. I used to think that color didn’t factor into what socks I sported more, but based on what socks have the most wear, I suppose I like warm colors! Bonus if it is space dyed, marled, velvet, or tie dyed!
You can tell that the Lumberjack Fleece Knee Highs are a top fave because she’s worn them in well. I love how extra cozy this fleece gets as it is washed, worn and loved.
At first, Mr. Natosi couldn’t remember the name of his favourite socks, “the textured ones” he said, having the same problem most of us do when trying to remember the name of one of our over 1,000 styles. I had a guess that it was one of B.Ella’s newer cotton larger-footed midcalves and I was right! Their casual dapperness totally matches his style.
I also had to make sure to grab a snap of the arm warmers he’s wearing today, because I honestly can’t picture Mr. Natosi without them. He’s had his thumbs in almost every arm warmer style we carry!
October! A time of magic and mystery and cooling weather. There’s no better month for the original Dreamer, Niq, to be born! The founder and President of Sock Dreams, she’s probably got the hardest time of all of us trying to pick a favourite sock to recommend to you all this month.
A long time ago, though, when she was the one writing the Sock Journal, Niq posted a sock of the day (or other sort of little updates). So she’s had her toes in just about every style we carry and have carried! That’s a lot of sock memory that can cloud up what one’s current fave style is.
To buy her some time, let’s look at some old favourites from Niq’s daily sock postings that we still carry. Because oldies are goodies and I’m forever thankful that not all socks are seasonal!
Sure, we don’t have that colourway in Boy’s Socks any longer, but the style thrives on! That also goes for the EG Smith Original Bootsocks, which may have gone away for a while but are once again a staple of Niq’s sock drawers.
And, it’s another one of our delicious Dream Stockings that Niq picked for her current fave! Here’s what she says:
Narrowing my favorite socks down to a single pair was not an easy task for me but the Super Dreamy won out because they’re like a security blanket for my legs and feet, comforting all the way to my soles. I love them for traveling, especially during the chillier months, because they layer well and can turn a tank top or t-shirt into a perfect pair of pajamas that can also double as a great base for my daywear.
Most truthfully, her current favourite are a pair of Cronert that aren’t live yet. But that’s par for the course, Cronert’s deliciously soft cotton and lovely patterns are Niq’s kryptonite and have been for a long time. The Elliot Anklet is another favourite, with the sweet scalloped cuff and florals. One more that she loves and misses (and we hope is something we can restock soon!) are the Tentacle Boot Socks, made specially for us by Raygun Robyn.
So, a happy birthday month to the reason you’re here shopping and we’re here socking (and to all you other October babies)! 🙂
After two months of just single Dreamer birthdays we’ve got a whole mess of folks born in July! Like their summer birthday month, the love they have for these styles burns bright!
Nina is our Customer Service Manager and the darkest ray of sunshine. If it’s black and sparkly, then she’s got a pair. When I asked her what her favourite style was, the first one on the list did not surprise me.
Some of my favorites include the Tabbisocks Party Night warmers because my hands are always cold, but it is imperative to always sparkle!
But she didn’t stop there!
I am a HUUUUUGE fan of the 100-inch Super Ruched socks made exclusively for us by Tabbisocks. A truly impressive sock that doesn’t get the love it deserves, IMO. They go on forever, soft and light, endlessly scrunchable, and a great conversation starter.
Tabbisocks Cat Tights because they are infinitely adorable . . . made even more so (if that’s even possible) with the DIY addition of google eyes and paired with my bestest kitty shoes.
Oh, my! I think it might have just occurred to me…I am in mad, mad love with Tabbisocks!
And we’re in mad, mad love with you, Nina!
Though she’s effusing over only one style, Sabrina (our savant of both the shop and Customer Service) says she picked the Dreamy Knees in Peacock to “spread my love for stripey Sock Dreams Dreamy/Color Knees. Stripey socks are my favorite! And Dreamy Knees/Color Knees are the best! I own about 7 different colorways, but I probably wear the Peacock Dreamy Knees the most because those are all my favorite colors. BEST. COLOR. PALETTE. EVER.”
With six types of Colour Knees, four Dessert Knees, three variations of rainbow, and all the delicious Dreamy Knees, Miz Sabz has the giantest heart of anybody to love all these stripes! Though she doesn’t limit her love, and lets other patterns get in on the mix.
But don’t think it’s all that colour that’s winning her over, ‘cause lady can wear a neutral as well.
Ryan is our Domestic Shipping Manager and a general all-around handy dude and wonderful human. He somehow manages to be a man of not many words who can still sling sass and enthusiasm with the best of them. Ryan chose the Dreamer Jacquard Flowering Vine OTK to represent his overall preference for our Dreamer Socks styles, the Extraordinary styles in particular.
First I need to give a solemn shout out to my favorite pair of socks for nostalgia’s sake. Those would be the O Yummies in Blueberry, my very 1st pair of Sock Dreams socks, that, alas, shared a similar fate with most of our discontinued lines, in that the yarn source dried up. My current favorites are the Extraordinaries, in any style/color. In my opinion these are the perfect year round sock. The coverage adds enough warmth for all but the coldest days and the weave gives enough breath-ability for all but the hottest days. Lastly, if you hate scrunchy, slouchy socks like me, then you’ll be pleased to know that these tend to stay where you put them on your legs.
Ryan is a joy to shoot and regularly rocks the heck out of taller socks paired perfectly with shorts. His love of our Dreamer Socks is only eclipsed by being a grade-A goof if you make him model toe socks.
And then there’s our fabulous Shop Shift Supervisor Rose! Girl can layer. And that’s her game, too:
SITM has always been my go to style of sock. I mainly wear a quirky novelty sock (or two) layered over bright (FT) tights or (NV) leggings. All year round. Every now and again I’ll go a little fancier with openwork tights, layered over solid tights and always with converse. Keepin’ it classy and a bit weird, layer by layer.
My go to colors are seafoam, teal, purple, black, and pink – often all at once.
So of course she layered two socks together because “Because dinosaurs in space“!
I can always rely on Rose for an ultimate pairing of socks and accessories, like the shirt and necklace combo with the Neon Suspenders or that she gave me three (!) under layering colour options when she modelled the Neon Rainbow Striped Fishnet Tights.
July birthday folks, you’re a joy! Keep cool temperature-wise, ‘cause I know you already got the “being awesome” part of cool down!
Mary is our Wholesale Accounts Specialist and she leads the Visual Merchandising & Interior Design, like in the shop and making our HQ a pretty place to be! Her skills are numerous and various and the socks she’s modelled ranges just as wide!
When I asked Mary to wear in her favourite pairs so I could get a snap, she brought me four, with coordinating shoes.
Mary’s fun selection, which includes the fabulous Lightweight Running No Show Toe Socks
Her personal faves are shorter, sportier socks and midcalf-to-knee high styles slouched down. Both the ECO Ginkgo Leaves Crew and the Diamond Rib Knee Highs fit the bill. Soft and oh so delightful when slouched, they’re great (particularly the Diamond Ribs) for dealing with the cold mornings and hot afternoons of June.
Born in Germany, she’s a go-to for quick translations (which is useful for getting all the info we can off of Cronert’s German-designed, Italian made styles).
A dedicated bike rider and marathon runner, Mary has quite the set of gams, which makes her fun to shoot in styles that emphasize shape.
Mary also is blessed (like me) with toes just at the end of most “one size” foot ranges (that US women’s shoe size 6-10 range). So, not only is she who we turn to when proving the veracity of a sizing label, but she also gets to wear the larger footed styles.
With feet that have as many talents as the rest of her, Mary is a blessed addition to our Dreamer family! And to all of you other June bug babies, happy birthday and happy start of summer!
