2016 is fast approaching, have you bought your calendar yet? If not, we’ve got you all set whether you’re buying for yourself or for a sock-loving friend! Let us introduce you to our very first Sock Dreams Calendar. At 11.75” by 17” and printed on heavy-duty paper, our calendar is the perfect size for hanging on a bedroom or cubicle wall. We’ve selected twelve of our favourite socks to dress up the pages. Each is surrounded by a lovely vintage art nouveau frame on a rainbow of damask backgrounds with a calendar grid generous enough to fit all your birthdays and appointments.
Our calendar is a little different than most because our week starts on Monday instead of Sunday, keeping the weekend at the end of the week where it belongs! Holidays and celebration days are represented by their own special colour-coded icons, with a key on the last page for your reference. And just in case you like to keep track of what the Moon is doing, we’ve included all its many phases for you too.
We only have a limited number of our 2016 calendars, so place your orders or stop into our Sellwood Store today to get yours!
Some of our favorite items to stock for the cold seasons are luxurious styles of arm warmers. Your hands are particularly sensitive to touch, meaning they really appreciate being wrapped in soft fibers. Your hands are also much closer to your eyes than your feet, which makes beautiful arm warmers easier to see and appreciate than socks. Today we’d like to take a look at one of our new suppliers for 2015, who are making arm warmers that are both soft and beautiful, making them the perfect gift; emiLime!
Star Arm Warmers (shown here in purple haze and cinnabar) feature a subtly scalloped design on one side, with stretchy ribbing on the other
Based in Lima, Peru, emiLime is dedicated to working with the local community, both in terms of sourcing the fibers that their arm warmers are knitted from, as well as the production of the garments themselves. Each design is a collaborative effort between the brains behind the company, and the local artisans who hand-knit every pair of arm warmers.
Dots Arm Warmers are available in bright or muted colorways
As stated on their website, part of emiLime’s mission is, “supporting economic development in vulnerable communities through craft.” This starts with materials. Both the alpaca fiber which most of their styles are knitted from, and the sheep wool that others incorporate are sourced from within Peru, with the company dealing directly with the producers. A lower environmental impact is just an added benefit to locally sourcing the majority of their materials. While most of the emiLime warmers we carry are 100% alpaca, a few styles make use of sheep wool, as well as some small percentages of acrylic and polyamide yarn to achieve the desired shape and texture.
Puff Arm Warmers alternate fibers for stripes of both color and texture.
Before samples for each new design are created, emiLime consults with their artisan leaders from within the community. The result is that techniques and fibers can be used to their greatest potential, for an ideal collaboration. With designs ranging from simple to ornate, there’s something for everybody!
Aire Arm Warmers are thick, but light, with an ultra-soft halo.
Once the design process is complete, each pair of warmers is hand-knitted by a local craftsperson. In fact, each pair comes with the name of the artisan who knitted it right on the label! Many of the knitters employed by emiLime are women who are able to do their work from their own homes, to supplement their families’ incomes.
Dent Arm Warmers in sundae and peacock
While we think that the beauty and feel of these warmers is reason enough to love them, their whole mission and collaborative process just makes us adore emiLime all the more. As a low-impact, community oriented company, we really appreciate where they’re coming from, so stay tuned! We have more styles from emiLime up our sleeves……. or rather, our arm warmers!
If you follow our blogs and social media, then you’ve probably realized many times over that we are a company obsessed with costumes. It should come as no surprise, then, that we like to take Halloween and run with it. Since we’re open 7 days a week, and not everybody is here every day, it’s hard to pick just one day for everybody to wear their costumes in, especially when Halloween falls on a weekend, as it does this year. Our solution? A full week of costumes! Check out our first three days – perhaps you can find inspiration for your own costume sock choices…
Since Nina’s regular wardrobe does tend to be a bit on the sinister side, she kind of just dresses as herself but more so during the earlier days of Halloweek… this IS her costume! But so is her skeleton hoodie! She’s sporting the brand new colorway of our Extraordinarily Longer Striped Thigh Highs; teal and black.
Jess wore one of our upcoming styles of leg warmers from ToeSox as a Frankensteinesque monster. While her outfit isn’t particularly costumey, between the greenish teal warmers and her cunning makeup she really captured this character, with attitude.
Dreamer Lucy happens to be a talented seamstress and seasoned cosplayer, so it’s no surprise that her gorgeous autumnal fairy costume is absolutely top notch! Her choice of Harvest Rainbow Thigh Highs transitions beautifully into the gradient of her layered skirts, with her purple-tinted hair topping it all off perfectly.
This cozy bat hoodie can make any outfit into a bat costume, but we think it’s worth going the extra mile and being a very stylish bat in an all-black outfit featuring various textures and patterns. This cozy little bat is The Night in Tabbisocks’ Crochet Look Tights, which feature a wing-like openwork pattern, as well as another style of upcoming ToeSox leg warmers.
Dreamer Tuesday is here to teach us an important lesson about costumes: it doesn’t always matter if you’re a specific anything, as long as your costume is FUN! She’s a little bit EVIL and a little bit sporty, as well as flouncy (a side-effect of petticoat wearing) and ADORABLE. We had a lot of fun coming up with different concepts to explain her raptor-headed alter ego…. clever girl.
For our second day of Halloweek we gathered the usual suspects by the bay door for a group shot. From left to right we had a flapper in Vertical Vintage OTKs, a unicorn wearing an upcoming pair of glittery OTKs from K. Bell, a classic witch in black and white Stripe Tights paired with traditional red witchy shoes, another unicorn, also wearing the soon-to-be-available glitter OTKs (and honestly, what else would a unicorn wear, if not glitter?), and Sally the rag doll from Nightmare Before Christmas, in scrunched down stripey knee highs!
Hooves were bumped.
Dogs were kissed.
Nina is back, as our favorite nightmare in Dream Stalker Stripes! While we’ve never seen Freddy wearing a garter belt, we think he would approve of her choice of the Suspender Clip Industrial Garter Belt, as it is just the kind of sturdy, no-nonsense hardware you need for terrorizing teens as they sleep. Falling socks would be another kind of nightmare entirely!
James joined in on day 3 of Halloweek with their amazing homemade Sith costume. The Sith typically keep their stockings shrouded in secrecy, but James was good enough to give us a peek at their N40s. These thigh highs are known for staying in place through the most intense lightsaber battles.
Dreamer Rachel also joined into the fray with her dragon slayer costume. This knight in shiny armor sported Glitter Lurex Tights in black/silver, to emulate the look of very glamorous chainmail. Black Simone Sleeves protect her arms from her foes. Her foes mostly consist of cold mornings and evenings.
Here we have a sea witch, though we think perhaps this is Ursula’s kinder, softer, more colorful witch sister. Opaque Tights in turquoise compliment her tentacles’ purple trim in an appropriately aquatic pop of color.
Tori brought a clever twist to her cat woman costume with her bionic legs! Right now she has to wear a brace on her right foot, but it just so happens to share a color scheme with the Toetal Recall Knee Highs from Sock It To Me! What was an injury is now an awesome excuse to be part cyborg.
Sabrina came up with her own contemporary twist on the beloved character, Wednesday Addams. We love that she chose a style of pigtails that showcases her amazing curls, while her subtly patterned Vertically Inclined Stockings are just the kind of darkness-on-darkness color scheme that Wednesday would appreciate.
And following Wednesday, we’ve got Tuesday again (there is so much room for jokes here that we are honestly at a loss), as Wolverine. Snikt! The BEER socks in yellow and black could not be a more perfect choice, as they match both Wolverine’s uniform and personality.
We hope you’ve enjoyed seeing our first three days of Halloweek! We highly recommend adopting this yearly tradition, and we’d love to see any costumes involving our socks! In fact, our upcoming newsletter is all about our customers’ costumes, so if you’re not signed up to receive the Dreamer Dispatches, now would be a great time. Happy Halloweek!
It’s not going to surprise anybody that as a company named “Sock Dreams,” socks are kind of our specialty. With that said, we have branched out over the years into sock-related things, such as garters (for keeping socks up), leg warmers (which are basically socks without feet), tights (really long socks with a waistband) and arm warmers (socks for your arms). There is a logic to these additions, and sometimes it’s our customers who bring the next logical step to our attention. Such is the case with Little Boot Peep.
Ruffle Kerfuffle Boot Toppers in cocoa, pink and gray.
For the last couple years, customers have been coming into our shop and emailing us, asking for “boot toppers” which are a newer concept to us; kind of like a leg warmer, only shorter, so they just peep out the tops of your boots, giving the appearance of a fancy sock layer. When we looked into this style, it appeared that Little Boot Peep, a company based in Seattle, boasting products made in the USA (which you know we love) was the “it” company when it came to this trend, so we thought we’d try some out!
Flora Love Boot Toppers in gray and buttercream with cream.
The genius thing about boot toppers is that while they appear to be just the decorative tip of a fancy, socky iceberg, they don’t add any bulk or insulation to your feet, which is ideal in transitional seasons when you don’t want to be too hot, or for boots that don’t have enough room for thick boot socks. They can also act as a draft-stopper in colder months, keeping cold air and precipitation out of your boots.
Put A Bow On It! Boot Toppers in gray and brown.
Currently we carry three styles from Little Boot Peep: the dainty and feminine Ruffle Kerfuffle, the cozy, sweatery Flora Love Boot Topper, and the slinky smooth Put A Bow On It, featuring drapey ribbons for you to style to your own liking!
As far as we’re concerned, boots and layering will never go out of style, making Little Boot Peeps a great boot-season staple, as well as a brand to watch. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
Happy Octoberween, everyone! We don’t know about you, but this is hands-down one of our favourite times of year. Fall has just hit and we have a month of jack-o-lanterns, candy, and cheesy black and white horror films to look forward to. This year we’re bringing you three terrifyingly fabulous monster stickers inspired a little by old cinema and scary stories.
The Monster’s Bride is looking absolutely shocking in simple White and Black Knees. We think she has an electric appeal.
And finally, the creature that goes “boo!” in the night, a hauntingly beautiful ghost. This grey lady wears N Stripes in Granite and Light Grey, to match her unearthly appearance.
If you’d like to take home one of our scary stickers, just wish us a Happy Halloween in your order notes and let us know which scream queen you prefer!
