If you’re a Portland local, chances are you’ve been to our Shop in the Sellwood neighborhood. While Sock Dreams is well into our teens now, the Shop is still at little sibling status and turns 6 years old this summer. We’re pleased to announce that we’re having an all-day bash at our shop on September 12th. Check out our Facebook event page here. There will be great discounts and a prize wheel. We also have a special Shop birthday sticker to give away for the first 100 lucky customers who shop with us! We hope to see you all there.
As you may be aware, Sock Dreams all started with one woman and her dream of being self-employed at her own sock company. Over the years her dream has grown into the company that we know and love today, and has provided us with opportunities to support other women and independent entrepreneurs, which we find very rewarding. The artist we’d like to draw your attention to today has actually been at it longer than we have: Wendy Costa has been producing her home and accessories line, featuring her own paintings and poetry since 1987, though she just started printing socks back in 2010. We absolutely adore her iconic art style, so of course we jumped at the chance to carry some of her styles!
Working out of a historic church in upstate New York, Wendy’s studio prints all of their fabric by hand, in small batches. All of their materials are sourced within the USA, which is true of our own house brands, and something that is very important to us!
Our current selection features four styles, which we consider prime examples of the kind of motifs Wendy Costa is known and loved for. The Deborah Grey and Junebug Printed Knee Highs have an off-beat Rococo vibe, featuring classic vertical stripes with a deliberately hand-drawn aesthetic, and fanciful ornamentation which pairs nicely with heels or flats. We love the way these play off of vintage fashion, but have a definite contemporary edge.
Other prominent themes in Wendy’s work include food, vintage appliances, animals and women. Her Cat and Music Crews (shown in the first photoset) depict one cat serenading another on the concertina, in a tiled and wallpapered setting which reminds us of a cafe in 1950’s France. Of course, we couldn’t bring in Wendy Costa socks without at least one design featuring one of her women! Willow Knee Highs (pictured below) feature a sassy redhead who peeks out from your ankles amidst a swirl of leaves, flowers, and plenty of vivid color!
From the origins of the socks themselves, to the imagery which makes them so recognizable, Wendy Costa’s designs are right up our alley! We’re very happy to share our dream of beautiful, expressive socks with this talented artist, and can’t wait to see what she creates in the future!
Well dreamers, it’s been nearly a year since we first wrote about Atlas Scoops, the gelato cart which sprung up in our shop’s own backyard, which means that yet another season of gelato is here! We happen to think that this is a very good photo op, and our models seem to enjoy doing a bit of… er…. “prop management” as our photographic subject slowly melts in the sun.
Last year we took our Dessert Stripes over to enjoy “à la mode”, but this year we wanted to do something a little different, so we’ve brought you our favorite sock/flavor combinations! Atlas Scoops has some delightful flavors, made by Staccato Gelato, and while some of them are a little out-of-the-ordinary, none of them are so sophisticated that a kid can’t enjoy them!
Dreamer Rae picked her socks for this shoot based on the flavor she wanted to model – peanut butter fudge! We felt that the N Stripes in Coffee and Mocha did a great job of representing this flavor combination, with a lighter, warmer brown for the peanut butter, and a nice dark chocolate brown for the generous swirl of fudge!
Dreamer Sarah wore our O Rayons in rust to evoke the concept of caramel, as she enjoyed her salted caramel gelato. The gelato itself is off-white, like most of the flavors, because Staccato Gelato uses locally sourced, quality ingredients which don’t include caramel coloring, but we thought the socks could do the talking, as it were.
We felt that the Ruffle Striped OTKs in chocolate, hemp and cream were a fairly perfect representative for the most classic of flavors – chocolate and vanilla! Toby the dog enjoyed sniffing every inch of the gelato-scented yard before laying down for a nap in the shade. We’re so glad our shop’s backyard has been turned into one of the best outdoor hangout spots in Sellwood!
One of Atlas Scoop’s more unusual flavors is lavender honey, and the M Stripes in lilac and natural really convey that flavor, via color. Most of us think of lavender as a scent or color before we consider it a flavor, but we think its aromatic herbaceousness is perfectly refreshing!
As Dreamer Brenna recently reminded us, there are lots of great reasons to visit the sweet little neighborhood of Sellwood, and we’re so glad that one more reason has taken up residence in our own back yard! We strive to make the sock shopping experience a fun one, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t reward yourself with a little gelato when you’re done!
There are several gifted musicians residing among the many Dreamers here at Sock Dreams. So when we were told that our summer ad for Bust Magazine should have a musical theme, we had just the right people for the job. We also had plenty of band equipment to work with.
Best of all, we had three varieties of Dream Stockings that rock like no others.
Nothing screams punk sock quite like our Super Stripes. At 36 inches long these stripey bad boys can be worn stretched up the thigh or scrunched over your boots. And with 15 different color varieties you can wear a different pair for each blazing guitar solo.
Our Vertically Inclined Stockings are perfect for conveying both class and sass. With eye-catching details these socks are as bold as your bass moves. The design of these cotton stockings is breathable enough to keep you cool. So you wont have to fret, while working the frets.
Because they are made of nylon, the N Stripes do a great job of staying in place. We love that, because when you are singing your heart out, you’ve got no time to stop and pull up your socks. These beauties come in array of vivid colors and have the stay-up power to keep you rocking all night long.
Even if you don’t have a killer band, these three sock varieties will have you looking like a rock star. Well, at least a sock star!
Recently we debuted our newest line of Dreamer Socks: Extraordinarily Longer Elemental Stripes. We were so inspired by the beautiful combinations that we made a whole host of stickers to match! Each is surrounded by the elements they represent, and feature their Alchemical symbol on their arm.
Cool and rich, Terra represents the element of Earth. These socks are your dependable favourites, a solid foundation to build an outfit.
Zephyr is fresh and light as a feather. The element of Air is uplifting, and brightens your whole look.
Inferno lights the element of Fire. These socks are fierce and powerful, but also warm and comforting.
The element of Water can be both liquid and solid, ocean and Glacier. This palette is dark and dreamy, and will look good under casual shorts or a froufy skirt.
Unlike the other four elements, the fifth element, Aether or Spirit, is not terrestrial in origin, but exists beyond our atmosphere. Alchemists and early scientists used it to explain all the spaces in-between; it was said that light traveled through it, and that gravity was caused by it. A lot of symbols have been used to represent Aether over the years, so we chose the one we thought fit best with the theme. It should be noted that, in Alchemy, this is also the symbol for salt.
Soon we will have regular Extraorindary Thigh High versions of these five colours, but for now we hope you enjoy these super long beauties! If you would like to receive a free Elemental sticker, please simply request one in your Order Notes field. Make sure to let us know which you want, or if you’d like for us to choose for you!
Oh, wait, we have one more! It’s not an Element like the others, but rather the wielder of one element in particular. Our Summer Sticker is this delightful Sea Witch wearing our Dreamy Knees in Seaside. She’s friendly, we swear, unless you’re throwing your litter into the ocean or poaching her whales, in which case you’d better watch out when travelling near large bodies of water…
