Holy moly, not only does this year make it three entire years we’ve been at Indigo HQ, but our brick-and-mortar shop has been in Sellwood exactly twice as long! Six years ago we got our little shop in Sellwood, setting in motion the luck that brought us to a new HQ and stockroom space just a few blocks away.
In all that time we’ve really settled into this little area, finding places to go for photoshoots, like the amusement park, where we commandeered a carousel to shoot some stripes:
Or our the dreamy gelato cart that shows up in the summer behind our shop:
Last year I talked about the cool places we were finding in the neighbourhood to shoot socks and, in general, several awesome new things have happened to help our product photos. Since we mostly rely on Dreamers as models, we have to find places nearby (so we don’t totally disrupt the workday).
That’s what made one of the newest things so great! There’s been lots of construction doings at Westmoreland park the past couple of years and they finally finished! Improving the water space for birds and fish, adding awesome play areas for the community and so much more, it’s become a favourite place to get the perfect sock shot! The placid pond (with duck in blurry background) and rad rockpile for adventurous climbing were just what we needed as backdrops for the Here There Be Monsters Midcalves!
The park is actually a healthy walk away and we don’t always have time to trek out there. It can make it difficult to keep things interesting, visually and for model and photographer, when you’re using the same space over and over. Luckily (or not?), when I needed a background to make the Rhinestone Starlight Knee Highs really pop, our parking lot helped out by bursting and sagging in a way that looked like a barren moonscape. It’s patched now though, because parking on the moon is a pain.
It’s not just finding new places to shoot, sometimes we need new feet. Our Dreamers rock and are awesome models, but there are only so many of us and that means there are only so many body types and fit experiences for testing styles.
Thanks to our Tumblr, we were able to put out the call to some awesome folks near us to come and model (and test!) some new products. Having our HQ in a place with good spots to go shoot made it all the more fun and easy (being in the heart of spring with the best petal-fall ever was a plus!) to work with these gorgeous folks!
We don’t always have to look outside HQ to find new models! Two pairs of little feet who accompany their mom to HQ are growing up into pretty amazing people who are super good at sitting still, even if the oldest is three. Yup, the biggest of our little feet came around not too shortly before we moved to Indigo HQ!
There’s one more change at Indigo HQ that I haven’t taken enough advantage of and that’s the little photo studio corner that has been set up inside. I did find it to be the perfect background for the dramatic Sheer Woven Diamond Illusion Tights, but with all this nice weather nowadays I’m taking outdoors while I can get it.
Three whole years at Indigo HQ and twice that at the Sellwood Shop! How time flies when you’re dreaming of socks!
We had a great time at our last event, Denver Comic Con. There were over 100,000 nerdy enthusiasts in attendance over the weekend. We got to meet thousands of amazing people and made quite a few new Sock Dreams fans. We can’t wait to get back there next year.
Our next event is taking place right in our own home town. We will be vending at Pride Northwest! It will take place at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland, Oregon from noon to 6pm on June 13th and 14th. It was listed on newnownext.com as #1 on their list of “10 pride festivals you’ve never been to but should.” With Governor Kate Brown as Grand Marshall of the pride parade, it should be quite an event!
If you need some help showing off your pride we will have plenty of rainbow socks, as well as many others, at booth P-5. We’ll be on the main promenade, close to the Morrison side of the sound stage. Martha Wash of “It’s Raining Men” fame, will be headlining on the stage, so we’ll be having a lot of fun at our booth. We’ll also be right next to the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, so you know it will be a blast!
As always our DreaM Stockings and Dreamer Socks will be marked down from our web prices, so stop by to stock up on your favorites.
If you are like us, you’ve spent hours browsing the website. You’ve gotten lost in the colors, the patterns, and textures. You’ve daydreamed about ways to layer and outfits to wear. But sometime, don’t you want to be able to pick up the socks and hold them in your hands? Wouldn’t you love to run your fingers over those textures and see the colors with your own eyes? Well, your chance is coming, because we are taking our socks on the road! Over the next eight months we will be traveling far and wide to bring our socks to some of the biggest comic book and pop culture events in the United States.
Not only will these events be the perfect time to see our products in person, but it’s your chance to take home some convention exclusives. As always, we will be bringing one of our collectible stickers in a brand new design. This one is a tribute to a favorite animated character. We love her sassy attitude and flawed, yet multifaceted nature. Even if her boyfriend is a real joker. Stop by our booth and get one for free!
In the same vein, we have also created a pair of socks inspired by this quirky character. These socks, like this woman, are truly extraordinary. They are super long and stretchy, expanding up to 24 inches in the calf and up to 27 inches in the cuff! If cosplaying is one of your passions, and you are thinking of dressing as a semi-psychotic trickster, than these will be a perfect fit.
Here is where you can find us and both of these exclusives this year:

Well dreamers, the year is very nearly over. 2014 has been a pretty intense year for a lot of us, it seems, with ups and downs all over the place. As such, we wanted to end the year on a happy note, and we felt that our local vintage cinema – the Moreland Theater—would be the perfect venue.
A meeting through the curtains – on the left Zaf wears Vintage Pinstripe Net Pantyhose with Satin Opera Gloves and a Layered Tulle Petticoat. On the right Sabrina rocks Spandex Fishnet Pantyhose, Stretch Lace Gloves, and a Mid-Length Petticoat.
And so, the Monday before New Years Eve, we got ourselves all glammed up, masquerade style, and headed over for the last photoshoot of the year. All things considered, it’s been a pretty good year for photoshoots, with carousels, abandoned train tracks, and gelato galore! We really kind of went above and beyond preparing for this one though….. one must go big for New Years, after all.
Dreamer Kori is wearing Lace Gauntlet Arm Warmers, which conveniently leave her hands free.
The Moreland Theater has been operating in Sellwood (or more accurately West Moreland) since the 1920’s, when it was also a venue for Vaudeville acts. The interior definitely reflects the era in which it opened, which is exactly why we wanted to take photos there! They also happen to be our neighbors, and you know we love to support our fellow local businesses.
To the right: Rae lounges in plum Floral Tights, which perfectly match her mask. To the left: Sabrina’s pairing of Mid-Length Petticoat and Fishnet Pantyhose is simple, yet simply glamorous.
In addition to treating ourselves to a fancy dress photoshoot, we wanted to treat all of our customers to something nice, too…. While we can’t really send you all bottles of champagne, for various reasons, we can offer you a sale! From now until 11:59 PM PST on January 2nd, you can get 20% off orders of $15 or more! Just enter the code, “Socky2015” when you go to check out!
Left: Surveying the theater in Kimi OTKs, Shimmer Organza Petticoat, Double Grip Clips (though one is at half-mast) and an upcoming style of sleeves from Tabbisocks! Right: Kimi OTKs, Floral Tights, Vintage Pinstripe Pantyhose, Signature Cotton Tights, and Fishnet Pantyhose.
Most importantly, don’t forget to have a happy (and socky) new year!
One of the really cool things about the sock business is that we have a slow season, and although it’s rather less slow these days than it used to be, it does give us time to take field trips to some more exciting photo locations! We recently showed you the new Gelato cart behind our shop, and now we’d like to share another great reason to come visit Sellwood: Oaks Park!
A lot of Portlanders don’t even realize that we have our own wee amusement park down in Oaks Bottom. If you live in Sellwood, though, there’s no mistaking the sound of children screaming (with joy!) that fills the summer air. What’s really special about the park is that many of its buildings have been there since it opened in 1905, advertised as “Portland’s Coney Island on the Willamette”. The oldest remaining ride was built just a few years later, in 1911. In fact, that’s just the ride we chose for this photoshoot – the Carousel!
We were lucky enough to be let in before hours by their lovely and highly knowledgeable manager, Mary Beth, who told us a little bit about the carousel. It’s called a menagerie carousel, because it is comprised of various animals, including a few that are quite unusual! An all-horse carousel is called a Merry-Go-Round, but the hand-carved creatures on this one go above and beyond!
We had so much fun with this shoot that we’re going to have to go back! If you ever find yourself visiting our shop in Sellwood, be sure to check out Oaks Park. It’s a place of wonder and nostalgia for all kids, even if you’re only a kid at heart!
