Spring is in full bloom these days and with it come the many annual events that mark this time of renewal. Last week we covered Eco-Friendly socks for Earth Day. We thought Arbor Day, a similar event solely dedicated to the planting and caring for trees, would be the perfect occasion to highlight all of our tree-themed socks.
The first American Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 in the Great Plains of Nebraska. Pioneers knew the true value of trees at a time when they were of paramount importance for fuel, building materials, and as natural wind-barriers to keep soil in place. Trees are still very important to us today; they’re needed to moderate temperature, clean the air, and provide habitat for wildlife.
At the first Arbor Day, prizes were offered to Nebraskan counties and citizens for properly planting the most trees that day. In fact, it’s estimated by the Arbor Day Foundation that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on that day! The Arbor Day Foundation is the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees, with over one million members, supporters, and partners. Arbor Day itself may be seasonal, but your love for trees can be displayed all year-round with the right pair of socks!
Arbor Day is commonly observed in the United States on the last Friday in April, however, many states observe the day at other times to coincide with their region’s optimum planting weather. The State of Oregon officially recognizes Arbor Day as the first full week in April, but you can use this interactive map to find out when your state celebrates this day, as well. Protect your legs while you’re out planting trees with a pair of Dream Stockings. Not only will you look cute and keep dirt and allergens off your sensitive skin, you’ll be wearing eco-friendly regenerated cotton socks made right here in the USA.
If you don’t have the means to plant a tree of your own this Arbor Day, there are still plenty of other ways you can commemorate it! Spending some time cleaning up a public park, or volunteering with a local tree-planting organization, are two excellent ways to uplift your community. Additionally, mapping out a tree identification hike or hosting a “biggest tree” search in your neighborhood are fun ways to get out there and appreciate your local outdoors. If climbing trees is your favorite hands-on way to appreciate them, donning a pair of tights or leggings will help ensure that your modesty isn’t compromised—no matter how high you climb.
For more information about the Arbor Day Foundation and their current projects, you can visit their website to locate your nearest chapter and become a member. If you are planning on giving back this Arbor Day, please feel free to share your plans with us in the comments below! Regardless of whether you spend the day resting in the shade of a tree or volunteering in your community, we hope everyone gets a moment to reflect on the importance of trees and making the world a greener place this year!
Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks in Hunter
Spring is warming up here in Portland, so we’re venturing outdoors more, and with Earth Day just two days away, the timing couldn’t be any better! This is also the perfect time to take a look at some of our Eco Friendly socks. I won’t be going too far into what exactly makes a sock “Eco Friendly” because Dreamer Brenna already did a great job of that last year! Instead we’re going to take a look at the socks themselves, because our collection is constantly changing! As for the other “green” holiday that happens this week, well…. We’ll get to that a little later….
We’ve been seeing more and more organic cotton options in recent years, and we love knowing that pesticides weren’t used in the production of our foot coverings! We’ve written about how much we love Zkano before, and with all organic cotton socks made in the USA, as well as their own fiber recycling program, they’re really doing it right! We also love Toesox and Sweet Marcel for their dedication to organic fibers.
Now using new cotton that’s been organically grown is wonderfully responsible, but what happens to the remnants from the clothing industry? “Do they all just end up in a landfill?” we hear you ask, as a tear wells in your eye. No need to cry, dear dreamers – some of those scraps get rejuvenated and spun into recycled yarn, to live another day, like a beautiful sock phoenix rising from the ashes of industry. In fact, most of the socks from our own house brands, DreaM Stockings and Dreamer Socks, are made using regenerated yarn, which is a mix of cotton, acrylic and polyester – we find it feels and washes like cotton! Of course, it’s not just us – RockNSocks and QT Feet styles all feature regenerated yarns, and even B. Ella has been getting in on the fun with some of their cotton styles.
Something we’re particularly excited about is the steadily increasing availability of fibers that are more renewable than cotton. Bamboo is a fast-growing grass, which gives it the potential to be incredibly sustainable, but because rayon from bamboo requires a not-so-eco chemical process to become rayon, the FTC actually requires that rayon from bamboo be labeled as such, while true bamboo yarn won’t include the word “rayon”. Because this is a bit tricky, we’ve gone ahead and rounded up all of our true bamboo options for you, so you don’t have to weed out the rayons.
But the renewable fiber we’re most excited about is still pretty scarce for us – we’re talking about hemp, of course! Hemp plants are fast-growing, low-maintenance, and don’t deplete the soil of nutrients that would allow other crops to come after it, unlike cotton. Hemp is a largely misunderstood plant, as it is related to psychoactive varieties of the cannabis plant, but we’re hoping to see more and more industrial uses of this incredibly versatile fiber.
Of course, the confusion surrounding various types and uses of hemp and other cannabis plants does make for a very tidy segue to that other holiday that happens to fall on today… 420!
The origins of the number and date that we associate with the indulgence in that other kind of cannabis (now legal for recreational uses in Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Colorado) has been hotly debated, with no real consensus as to where it came from. That’s kind of beside the point, though, because the holiday is all about having fun and relaxing with friends. Even if you live in the vast majority of places in which recreational marijuana is still illegal, these socks are a perfectly law-abiding way of expressing your support for the legalization (or at least decriminalization) of what is, after all, an incredibly useful plant.
Hello dearest Taurus. It is your time to shine, and the next few weeks are all about you! As amateur astrologers, we Dreamers would like to cater to all of your sock needs and desires. So let’s get right to it, shall we?
The Bull gets a bad rep for being obstinate, and while that may be the case at times, the truth is not quite so simple. When a Bull has a path in mind, they will push through thick and thin to reach their destination as planned. They won’t let anyone or anything deter them, and really, why should you Taurus? Your tenacity has consistently lead you to your goals. When you want something, you make it happen. You, Taurus; you make your own dreams come true, and that is something to be admired.
What others might see as bull-headedness, we like to think of as perseverance. A bull does not give up, even when everyone else has. You are tough as nails Bull, and you deserve socks that can hold true to your stalwart gate. Darn Tough makes just the right kind of socks for you. These are stubbornly sturdy socks Taurus. In fact, the company that makes them (right here in the USA) is so confident in their indomitable design that they have dubbed them “the best possible socks the world has to offer.”
Now Taurus, while we know that you work hard to achieve your goals, we also know that all work and no play makes Taurus a dull bull. So indulge yourself Taurus, we know you’ve earned it! Here is just a smattering of some of the most luxurious socks we have to offer for our industrious Bulls.
You are a sensitive beast Bull, and we know that not any old synthetic fiber will work for you. Luckily, we’ve created a few collections of socks made with natural fibers, from cotton, to wool, to our personal favourite, bamboo! Comfort is of the utmost importance to you Taurus, and it just so happens that comfort is our forte.
For the next few weeks, while The Bull rules the heavens, we’ll be giving our special Taurus themed stickers to anyone who asks. We’ve a limited number, so place your Birthday orders soon Taurus, and don’t forget to ask for a sticker in your order notes when you check out. Happy Birthday Bulls, may your month be steady, soothing, and sumptuous!
They say that April showers bring May flowers, and here in Portland that couldn’t be more true! While we understandably have a pretty extensive collection of floral socks, we also have a small, yet growing assortment of rain and water themed socks. You won’t find them as an existing category on the website, though, which is why we’ve been saving this round-up for a rainy day…
Beyond the accurate observation that plants require water to thrive, the “April showers” rhyme reminds us that we all have times when we must endure hardship or unpleasantness in order to make it to a better day. Arroyo Midcalves from Sweet Marcel are named for seasonally-filling streams, and as such they offer the same message of hope and endurance, only in this case the rain isn’t a trial to overcome — it actually brings an end to the hardship of drought. Featuring water droplets, this design really couldn’t fit the theme any better!
Of course, those of us who see nothing but cloudy skies for six-to-nine months of the year may tend to have a little trouble relating to the hardships of drought. It’s not that we lack empathy – it’s just that when you don’t see the sun for months, the lack of vitamin D can really affect your mood! While socks won’t take the place of vitamin supplements, these cloudy styles are so cute that they might help you to appreciate the weather, even when it’s raining cats and dogs!
Now raining cats and dogs is one thing, but sometimes it rains so hard in places that there’s flash flooding! This is just a little too exciting for most folks, and by exciting we mean dangerous! Better to dip your toes into some water-themed socks than actual flood waters, if at all possible…
On the other hand, if you know your feet are going to be submerged, we have socks for that! Showers Pass, a Portland-based cycling gear company, has developed waterproof socks, which also wick moisture out from the inside, for the ultimate in dry feet. How practical is that?!
As much as we enjoy finding socky solutions for any kind of climate, we completely understand if some of you are just absolutely Done with being rained on for the year. For those of you who are simply over it, we leave you with this final suggestion to get you through the last of the rainy season….
Since most of us Dreamers are sock fans, it’s probably not much of a surprise that we occasionally struggle with sock storage. It can be tempting to just throw all our socks into a pile and be done with it, but that can make socks hard to find, not to mention take up valuable floor space.
We’ve shared in the past some of the ways we Dreamers store our socks, and today we’re going to talk about organizing your sock drawer (or sock dresser, as the case may be), complete with a quick DIY.
If you’re going for a complete overhaul of your sock collection, it’s probably easiest to tackle them all at once, so you can start fresh. This will also give you a chance to go through and remove socks that need mending, socks that have outworn their usefulness (literally), and socks that could go on to a better home with a friend or a local thrift store. Seasonal socks can also be moved to longer-term storage, until their season rolls around again.
This is also a good chance to indulge in that tempting sock pile.
Once you’ve determined who will stay and who will go, it’s time to start folding. Our goal here is to 1) make them as compact as possible, 2) make it easy to see everything in your drawer, and 3) maintain the quality of your socks as long as possible. To this end, you want to make your socks into a nice folded square; one that is flat, and can be stood up next to its brethren in your drawer, making your morning grab for a sock that much quicker.
There are a few different techniques to folding socks. Perhaps the most common (and certainly the quickest) is to fold the top cuff of one sock over the other, to keep them connected. This may save time, but it doesn’t fulfill any of our folding goals: it takes up lots of space, will quickly lead to a chaotic drawer, and will stress the elastic band of the sock doing the binding. All in all, not an ideal technique.
These Holiday Striped Crews are having a stressful day.
