The term “nerd” has evolved a lot over the years, from an insult to a badge of pride, but recently we’ve seen it be used more like the term “geek”—to denote a specific passion or expertise. You can have Food Nerds, Sports Nerds, Gardening Nerds…really, whenever you know an abnormal amount about something you love, you can consider yourself a “nerd.” Here, we’re all resident Sock Nerds, and we have a suspicion many of you are, too. But what other types of nerds are you? We thought we’d round up some recommendations for those passions, to help you fly your nerd flag high, no matter what brand of nerd you are.
To start us off, we thought it made sense to look at one of the more “traditional” nerds: the genre nerd. Genre nerds love the satire and discourse of science fiction, the allegory of fantasy, and the romance of horror, and don’t care much what medium they get it from. Books, movies, table-top games…there are so many ways to explore this passion, and we’ve got some perfect socks to fit into that mix.
If you travel in genre-nerd circles at all, you’ve probably heard that a certain duo has returned to air-waves after over a decade, and is back to tackling alien invasions and untangling unexplainable happenings. Well, we’ve got a few socks to help you celebrate!
Of course, Science Fiction covers a lot of scenarios, races, and worlds, but its most known for its high-flying space adventures, and we’ve got plenty of items to evoke an intergalactic frame of mind.
And if you’re a fan of a certain famous space opera, you should definitely check out Stance’s line of Star Wars socks, which come in adult and kid sizes.
Looking for something a bit more down-to-earth? Here are some styles based on the magic of the Elements, which feature frequently in Fantasy stories. First from our Dreamer Socks line…
And also from the lovely Ozone…
And we even have a few socks to represent some of our favorite fantasy creatures!
Horror has bled (no pun intended) into fantasy and sci fi from the beginning. If classic horror is where your heart lies, we’ve got a few items that show that horror isn’t just for Halloween.
One of the things we love most about genre settings are the diverse, beautiful (and often devastating) worlds these stories inhabit. We’re going to end this line-up with a few items that evoke these worlds in our imagination, and hopefully they will spark something in yours.
Valentine’s Day is a surprisingly big holiday for us – or maybe it’s not that surprising, if you consider that every pair of socks consists of two perfectly matched sole mates….. or do they?? Today we’ll be taking a look at our socks that don’t match, but still go together perfectly. Somehow we find them even more romantic than pairs that are carbon copies of each other… after all, they say that opposites attract.
The first supplier of mismatched socks that jumps to mind is the aptly named Solmate. Featuring fair isle patterns and eye catching colorways, each US-made pair includes two (or in the case of the children’s crews, three) mismatched socks that go together perfectly. As their motto says, “life’s too short for matching socks!”
As some of us know all too well, being soulmates or best friends won’t always keep us from butting heads. Don’t worry – the socks of Hooray Hoopla understand. Versus socks pair two traditional “enemies,” but they still end up being perfectly matched. Just don’t let your next argument be over who’s the dragon and who’s the unicorn – take a hint from the socks, and learn to coexist!
While there are only a few companies specializing in mismatched socks, there are several others who have dipped their toes into the concept. Stance has several styles of not-quite-matching socks, while K. Bell only has one….. but that one comes with four different socks, so it probably deserves some sort of prize.
Mismatching socks is so fun that we’ve had to try it ourselves! Our Spiral OTKs in the peppermint colorway are only available seasonally, and feature one red with white sock, and one white with red! We also recently introduced a mismatched version of our M Sleeves in four different colorways – while these sleeves are the same colors on both arms, one side has wider stripes, for a subtly quirky look.
But the best thing about mismatched socks is how wonderfully giftable they are! They’re kind of like the friendship necklace of socks – buy the same set for yourself and a loved one, then the two of you can decide if you want to mismatch together, or trade one of the socks for symmetrical, yet complimentary looks. However you decide to wear them, they’re sure to be a match made in heaven!
Back in Autumn, Dreamer Zaffie covered the many accessories we carry to keep thigh highs from falling down. Today we’re going to take a closer look at our selection of garter belts. We currently carry seven garter belts on our site from five different brands, all of them a little unique in their own right. Shopping for garter belts (also referred to as “suspender belts”) can be particularly challenging when it comes to selecting a size. Understandably so, since where you wear your garter belt is really a matter of personal preference. Some folks prefer to wear their garter belts higher around their waist while others prefer to wear theirs lower on their hips. To prep for purchasing a garter belt, there are two key measurements you will need to know: your hip measurement and your waist circumference. Once we’ve got those two numbers, we can start taking a closer look at our selection of garter belts.
Industrial Suspender Clip Garter Belt
To start off, let’s begin with our Industrial Suspender Clip Garter Belt, made in the USA exclusively for Sock Dreams. This sturdy belt lacks frills, however, it more than makes up for it in terms of durability. Its straps extend 5.5-9 or 10 inches, including the suspender clips. The Velcro closure is constructed so that the rough side of the Velcro faces your clothing. Currently, this item comes in four sizes:
- Small: 24-28 inches
- Medium: 32-36 inches
- Large: 37-41 inches
- Extra Large: 43-47 inches
What people love about it: the suspender clips are designed to firmly hold up socks with thick cuffs, such as our Extraordinarily Longer Thighs
What people didn’t love so much: the clips can be rough on sheer, delicate thigh high styles
Left: shown worn lower on the hips with the straps shortened
Right: shown worn higher, closer to the waist, with the straps extended
Industrial Garter Belt
Much in the same vein as the previous belt, the Industrial Garter Belt is also a sturdy, practical way to keep up those thigh highs. The straps extend 5-9 inches long and instead of the suspender clips, these have a traditional button and loop fastener. For an extensive look into the difference between these clips, please see our “What is a Garter Clip?” post. The Velcro closure is designed with the rough side facing you, so depending on the fit you may want to consider wearing a camisole underneath this belt. Currently, it comes in three sizes:
- Small: 22-30 inches
- Medium: 32-44 inches
- Large: 44-60 inches
What people love about it: while it’s not best suited for thigh highs with doubled-over cuffs, this durable belt can hold up most medium-weight cotton styles such as our Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks
What people didn’t love so much: the vinyl tab on the garter clips isn’t permanently attached (and, sadly, we do not have any replacement tabs) so make sure to keep them securely snugged after taking your garter belt off
Left: shown worn higher on the waist with the straps extended
Right: shown worn lower on the hips with the strap shortened
Deep Lace Suspender Belt
Taking a step back from our industrial styles, let’s jump right into the Deep Lace Suspender Belts from Miss Naughty. These beautiful belts are six inches wide and made of sultry, stretchy lace. The straps extend 6-11 inches long with button and loop garter clips that are disguised with a pretty little ribbon. The belt closes with eight hook and eye fasteners with three adjustable sizing options. This item comes in six different sizes, so having your waist and hip measurements is really important for these:
- Small: 25-32 inches at the top and 42 inches at the bottom
- Medium: 30-42 inches at the top and 47 inches at the bottom
- Large: 32-44 inches at the top and 49 inches at the bottom
- Extra Large: 34-47 inches at the top and 53 inches at the bottom
- 2X: 42-54 inches at the top and 61 inches at the bottom
- 3X: 43-58 inches at the top and 63 inches at the bottom
What people love about it: in addition to coming in a variety of sizes, the super soft and stretchy lace was a plus among those who reviewed it
What people didn’t love so much: the garter clips are plastic, not metal, which means that they can break if you try to force them to clasp socks with thick cuffs (this style works best with light-medium weight thigh highs like the Roll Top Extraordinarily Longer Thigh Highs)
Bear in mind that this belt is six inches long, so having both your waist and hip measurements is super useful when choosing the correct size
Lace Garter Belt & Thong
Staying with this lace theme, let’s move right along to our most affordable garter belt, the Lace Garter Belt & Thong from Leg Avenue. This basic garter belt has straps with button and loop garter clips that extend 4-8 inches long. This belt only comes in one size, with an adjustable strap in the back that closes with a hook and loop:
- One Size: 34-45 inches
What people love about it: those who reviewed this item were pleased with the pretty lace detailing and overall fit of the belt
What people didn’t love about it: the metal clips are very small, so while thinner or fishnet styles work wonderfully, medium-heavy weight socks will not fare very well
Left: shown worn high around the waist with straps extended
Right: shown worn lower around the hips with straps extended
(lace thong not pictured)
Satin Suspender Belt
If lace is not exactly your thing, you may be interested in Miss Naughty’s Satin Suspender Belt. The straps extend 6-11 inches long with button and loop garter clips that are disguised with the same pretty ribbon accent as the Deep Lace Suspender Belt. This belt closes with two hook and eye fasteners at the back, with three adjustable sizing options, and comes in six sizes:
- Small: 23-28 inches
- Medium: 27-37 inches
- Large: 31-41 inches
- Extra Large: 34-48 inches
- 2X: 43-55 inches
- 3X: 48-60 inches
What people love about it: not only is this garter belt comfortable, the traditional cut provides a flattering fit
What people didn’t love so much: the plastic garter clips aren’t well-suited for medium-heavy weight socks and the sizing is a little tricky for these, so please feel free to contact us with any sizing queries you may have
Left: shown here worn lower on the hips
Right: shown here worn higher on the waist
Rago Six Strap Garter Belt
This silky garter belt from Rago is lightly reinforced along the stomach area with decorative edging along the elastic for a chic finish. It features six glorious straps that extend 4.5-8 inches long with button and loop garter clips. Unlike the rest of the belts we’ve covered, this one doesn’t have a closure, it just slips on. This belt comes in nine different sizes, all listed for the waist measurement:
- Waist: 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42
- Rago recommends: choose the next largest size if your waist is 10 inches smaller than your hips or more
What people love about it: the ingenious six strap design was very well-received by reviewers and the loop on the garter clips is made from metal, which works very well for our medium weight styles, such as the Ribbed M Stockings
What people didn’t love so much: while great for medium weight styles, this belt isn’t really great for socks with doubled-over cuffs
Due to the sizing, having both your waist and hip measurements is important to finding the perfect fit
Rago Cincher Garter Belt
Our last garter belt is the perfect balance of utility and beauty. This cincher comes with removable garters that extend to 5 inches long. The cincher itself is 12 inches long, so you will definitely need both hip and waist measurements for this one. It closes in the front with hook and eye fasteners and currently comes in eleven different sizes, all listed for the waist measurement:
- Waist: 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46
- Rago recommends: choose the next largest size if your waist is 10 inches smaller than your hips or more
What people love about it: the removable garters are great because you can easily swap them out for Double Grip Clips if you want to wear this with thicker socks
What people didn’t love so much: some of our reviewers wished the garters could extend longer (they are 5 inches in length)
Left: shown worn lower on hips
Middle: shown worn higher around waist
Right: Double Grip Clips can be used in place of the removable garters

There’s just something about a fresh new pair of socks that can really make a person feel good, but have you ever wondered what more socks have to offer in the feeling-good department? As it turns out, socks are kind of the cheerleaders of the wardrobe. Not only can they be bright and cheerful to lift your mood, but the right socks for the right occasion can make all the difference in how you feel physically! Today we’re going to take a look at what your socks can do for you, with Socks for Self Care!
Starting with the basic concept of “nice feeling socks make you feel nice”, we’ve assembled some of our softest, comfiest socks for when you’re sick at home, dragging your tired self to doctor’s appointments, or just need a pick-me-up. Quite a few of these options feature wool or other animal fiber blends, as wool has a great way of regulating temperature, so that it keeps you warm in cold weather, as well as cool in hot weather. It also dries very quickly, making it a great choice for folks who find their feet perspire more than they’d like.
Not everybody enjoys wool, though. In fact, some people just have a sensitivity to animal fibers in general, so we’ve rounded up some vegan options as well. In addition to thermal knit and acrylic as great wool alternatives, we’ve got a pretty decent selection of bamboo styles! Bamboo yarn or rayon from bamboo is super soft and enjoyable to wear, but it’s also great in hot weather, for those of you who just aren’t willing to try the whole “wool socks for summer” thing.
Most people’s feet see an awful lot of use, so it’s no surprise that injuries can occur. While some people suffer from bunions or plantar fasciitis, others have trouble with circulation in their feet or metatarsal pain, and we have socks for these things!
Other people have sock-specific sensitivities, which makes things like bulky toe seams or tight cuffs a big no-no. Nothing makes a bad day worse like socks that rub your feet the wrong way! For this reason, we have entire categories dedicated to “woven toe seam” socks, with a completely flat toe seam, as well as “non-constrictive”.
But what if it’s your toes rubbing up against each other that is causing discomfort? Believe it or not, toe socks are great for this! It might seem like they just add extra bulk between your toes, but much like wearing flip-flops, the more you do it, the more used to the feeling you get. We also carry some extra-thin toe socks, which can be more comfortable for those of us with more sensitive feet, in addition to providing relief from the friction of your toes rubbing each other. If you find that you experience discomfort from your toes rubbing together with regularity, you might want to take a look at how your shoes fit, too. Shoes that are too narrow or short in the toe box can cause a lot of pain over time, and while socks can help, they can’t change the way your shoes fit.
Because this is a blog on self-care, it’s only natural that we list some options for when you’re too far under the weather to leave the house. Whether you’re sick in bed, or just not emotionally prepared to face the outside world (hey, it happens, and there’s no need to feel ashamed!) a nice pair of slipper or bed socks can keep your feet comfy and clean, as well as giving you something cheerful to look at while you recuperate.
Over the years some of us have learned the importance of preemptive self-care, which can go a long way. Sometimes you just feel too crummy to get out of bed or take a shower, but when you’re feeling up to it, take the time to pamper yourself! Try these quick and easy steps to treat yourself to a spa day, using older, less beloved socks and stockings, or items from our Crafty Bundles:
- Snip the top cuff off of a nylon thigh high, and use it to keep your hair off of your face while you give yourself a facial.
- Use an old clean sock, or snip the bottom 6 inches or so (including the toe) off of a thigh high or pair of tights. Fill it with fragrant herbs, and tie off the top so they’re trapped inside. Now you can run yourself a herbal bath, and easily remove the plant matter which would otherwise try to make it down your drain.
- Back in 2013 Dreamer Brenna brought us this quick and easy tutorial for a DIY heat pack, which only really requires a long sock and some rice! You can also put your rice pack in the freezer, for low-intensity icing of aches and pains (for best results, we suggest icing, then heating achy muscles, to bring down swelling).
- Mix equal parts sugar and oil (olive or coconut oil work well for this) and scoop into the toe of an old sock or cut-off nylon pantyhose, and tie off opening. Now you can use this as a “sugar scrub” exfoliant in the shower or bath. Add a drop or two of your favorite skin-safe essential oil for scent, if desired.
- Generously apply lotion or oil (baby oil, jojoba or olive oil are good choices) to feet, paying special attention to heels or other dry/cracked areas. Put on a pair of clean cotton socks and either go to bed, or just wait for a few hours if you’re not into sleeping in socks. Your feet will come out feeling much softer! Just be careful to wash your feet off before you go walking barefoot on any slick surfaces, as getting injured in a fall is the opposite of what we’re going for.

While we love wool, we realize that it’s not for everyone. Those with allergies, sensitivities, or who choose not to wear animal fibers deserve an alternative material. Synthetic fleece, often made from polyester or nylon, was designed to mimic the insulating properties of real fleece by trapping warm air near your skin. Last year Dreamer Brenna wrote a sock journal about the fleece items we had at the time, but since then we’ve gathered together a large selection of polar fleece and fleece-lined products that will make your chilly legs toasty warm.
So it’s cold outside, but your regular pair of opaque tights just aren’t doing it for you. That’s where fleece comes in! Fleece-lined tights and leggings are a true treasure for those of us who live in cold, wet climes. The thick, opaque fabric is smooth on the outside—just like a standard pair of tights—but inside it is lined with fluffy and warm fleece.
If you want something a little different from the standard fare, we have 90% Cotton Fleece-Lined Leggings with a cloud-soft inside reminiscent of your favorite vintage sweatshirt. Then there are the Thermal Fleece Leggings which have a faux-fur lining that’s as plush as a teddy bear. We even have these cozy Fleece-Lined Knee Highs, for those of us who prefer socks to tights or leggings!
Last week Dreamer Rosalind wrote a great piece on Polar Feet, a Canadian company that makes socks completely out of polar fleece material. We became avid fans after giving them a try. Not only do they come in awesome patterns, but there are tabi socks, kids’ sizes, and even narrow and wide calf knee highs. But don’t think we’ve neglected your hands! Talismana Designs has two styles of beautiful elfin gauntlets to warm your wrists while going about your day.
Wool and Polar Fleece
Finally, for those customers who are not adverse to a little wool, the marriage of the two materials is quite special! Pook’s Super Socks are lined in a thin polar fleece which keeps the delightfully scratchy and insulting wool outer sock off your your sensitive skin.
