It’s been awhile since I’ve last written, sorry about that. I’ve just been so busy trying to keep up with my precious babies! This morning I summoned all of them to their feeding bowls by singing the labels of their food cans. It truly brightens my smile to hear their little paws scamper towards me for breakfast. Of course, any kind of fish is their favorite.
Cat Fish Crew Socks in Lime and Black
Once my kitties were feasting, I set about refreshing the water and food bowls I keep outside for any potential stray friends. Macie, the young girl who lives next door, saw me and came over to help groom all the cats. She gets such a kick out of helping me try to share photos of my feline friends with my online friends! As handy as she is with a camera, I have to admit it was rather difficult getting any of my babies to cooperate.
Macie had to run to school amid our photo session, which actually proved to be perfect timing since my good friend Betsy came over shortly after that. I can’t help but think it’s cute when the kitties play-fight with my friends, but Betsy didn’t seem too amused. I told her it might be due to the fact that she wasn’t wearing anything that let the cats know she is one of their people! Lucky for her, I have quite the collection of cat socks.
Betsy and I walked down to our local grocery store to inquire about empty cardboard boxes they might have laying around. I’m currently constructing a handmade scratching post for my cute kittens and need all the extra materials I can find. Two clerks that work at the store, Michael and Roni, know about my endeavor and occasionally set some boxes aside for me. It warms my heart to meet fellow cat-lovers down for the paws, which is why there’s no better conversation-starter to me than my critters.
Betsy and I had one last stop for the day, which was the library. I spent my time checking out books on how to better communicate with my furry friends. When, oh when, will animal translation devices be commonplace!? Betsy wanted to grab a few books for her niece Olivia, who is writing a report on big cats for school – an interest I fully support. While I love all types of animal print, I admit I’m mostly partial to leopard.
The rest of the afternoon pretty much flew by in a flash! I tried to get Betsy to stay for supper, but she didn’t seem interested once we got back to my place. Now I’m lying in bed surrounded by my extraordinary pets and I should be ironing their costumes but I can’t bear to disturb them. It’s so hard for me to get up once they’ve all fallen asleep around me, so I am probably just going to follow their lead and hit the hay.
Until next time,
– The Cat Lady
Today, we’re going to go on a journey. A journey to uncover some of the great mysteries of our world, those creatures that have been relocated to the realms of cryptozoology—those who have been ignored or abandoned by conventional science. Today, we’re on the hunt for cryptids.
Deep in the depths of the snowy Himalayas, there dwells a secretive creature that few have laid eyes upon, often referred to as the Yeti. With the shape of a human and the hair of an animal, this ape-like figured has been known to terrify climbers and garner the respect of locals. Can you spot the Yeti in these socks?
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have our own beloved cryptid. Namely, Big Foot! (You’ve probably heard of him, he’s kind of a big deal) He’s been known to inconvenience hikers and startle campers, but by most accounts is a pretty good guy. With his humanoid shape and shy nature, perhaps he’s a cousin of the elusive Yeti? Either way, we’re proud to call him “neighbor,” and now you can, too!
Although there have been many sightings of unidentified lake-dwelling creatures, the most famous is the tale of the Loch Ness Monster (or “Nessie,” as her admirers know her). In rural Scotland, Nessie has been spotted swimming leisurely around her lake, or wandering the nearby banks. Although some sources report her as being dangerous, we think she’s pretty darn cute, don’t you?
Although legends of the mighty, ship-crushing Kraken are well-known, many cryptozoologists haven’t given up hope in a real life sea-monster fit to battle any pirate ship. Here at Sock Dreams, we’re a little obsessed with cephalopods, and the Kraken is one of our favorites. But beware the open ocean!
The idea of aquatic, tail-adorned humanoids has captured the imagination for centuries; there’s just something magical about the idea of a mermaid. With so much unexplored ocean out there, surely there’s room for a kingdom of merpeople? Now you too can blend in with our scaly cousins when the truth comes out.
Although many cryptids are based around supposedly legendary creatures, some are conventional creatures in unconventional environments. Such is the urban alligator, known to a select few to prowl the sewers of New York City, terrorizing citizens and keeping the city’s rat population in check
Another such cryptid is familiar in form, but hasn’t been seen around these parts for awhile…or has it? Once giant lizards ruled the world, and some believe that small populations still exist today, in remote areas, just waiting to be discovered. In the meantime, you can start rocking some dino pride with these lovely specimens.
Each of these cryptids, and the countless others we haven’t named, have teams of dedicated cryptozoologists volunteering their time to solve the unsolvable. While different theories come in and out of vogue, and vary by cryptid, our favorite is probably the theory that these unknown, unexplainable creatures have made it to Earth from the far reaches of space, as alien citizens, mutant experiments, or perhaps just long-lost pets. The real truth is still anyone’s guess, but maybe one by one, these mysterious creatures will reveal their secrets to us.
The kilt is one of the most iconic symbols of Scotland, right up there with thistles, bagpipes, and haggis. Countless works of art and media depictions feature strong, proud warriors in full tartan splendor. The original kilt has its roots in the 16th century, but folks are still rocking this traditional garb–and not just in Scotland! Modern kilts run the gambit from classic tartan to a more utilitarian solid, and are found in many more fabrics than just wool. But what does one wear below the kilt?
Why, kilt socks, of course!
Traditional kilt socks are generally made of wool in undyed or natural colors, cuffed and gartered smartly below the knee. Sometimes they are rather plain, but often they are knit with beautiful bobbles and cabled designs. If you want a particularly thick cuff, shop in the Over the Knee or Thigh High sections so you’ll have more sock to work with. Top it all off by attaching a garter flash–a small piece of ribbon or fabric that coordinates with the kilt–to one of our Simply Adjustable Sock Garters for that perfect look.
Modern kilt enthusiasts shouldn’t feel constrained by tradition, however! There are patterns and colors enough to suit any casual, every-day kilt. Stripes and Argyles–a long-time partner of kilts already–are always fun. But what about Tie-Dye? Nerdy novelty? Socks with something to say? Loud socks work particularly well with utility kilts in solid colors.
Beyond the Knee
Though a thick cuff at the knee is traditional, the modern kilt-wearer has as many choices as those of us who wear skirts and shorts. For warmth and coverage, long socks, or even tights, are excellent ways to keep breezy thighs warm. If you’re new to thigh highs and find they slide down, we recommend the Industrial Suspender Clip Garter Belt. And no, garter belts are not just for ladies. That’s a silly stereotype that’ll have your socks ’round your ankles in no time. If long isn’t your thing, that’s okay, the standard midcalf length looks great paired with a kilt and maybe a set of Classic Sock Garters for that dashing look.
Are you inspired to ditch the trousers and don a kilt? Don’t be shy, you’ll look totally cool. In fact, we’d love to see and share photos of our be-kilted customers in Sock Dreams socks! You can post pictures on our Facebook, or submit them via tumblr. If you would rather email them, send them on over to email@example.com–just remember to let us know your preferred name, your pronouns, and if it is okay to share your photo on our social media sites.
Let’s face it. Snags happen. Socks can be particularly prone to this fiasco. They can catch on boot zippers, or stick on splintery furniture. They can get clawed by kittens, or entrapped by bike chains. Fortunately we in the sock business have found a useful tool to counteract this textile tragedy.
This genius little device may not look like much, but has the power to rescue your favorite stockings from certain ruin. The tiny hook can grab hold of that pesky loose thread and bring it through to the inside, restoring your socks to respectability. It is very inexpensive and can be found in the sewing tools aisle of your local craft or fabric store. Here is a step-by-step guide for how to use this handy helper to remove a snag.
Step 1: Place the sock over your hand so that you have access to the inside of the sock. Locate the snag.
Step 2: Move the snag repair tool inside the sock and find the back side of the snag.
Step 3: Insert the tool through the back side of the fabric so that it pokes through the front of the sock right next to the snag.
Step 4: Place the snag inside of the hook and close the latch.
Step 5: Pull the tool back through the inside of the sock, bringing the snag with you.
Step 6: Enjoy your restored sock! Yep. It’s that easy.
The term “nerd” has evolved a lot over the years, from an insult to a badge of pride, but recently we’ve seen it be used more like the term “geek”—to denote a specific passion or expertise. You can have Food Nerds, Sports Nerds, Gardening Nerds…really, whenever you know an abnormal amount about something you love, you can consider yourself a “nerd.” Here, we’re all resident Sock Nerds, and we have a suspicion many of you are, too. But what other types of nerds are you? We thought we’d round up some recommendations for those passions, to help you fly your nerd flag high, no matter what brand of nerd you are.
To start us off, we thought it made sense to look at one of the more “traditional” nerds: the genre nerd. Genre nerds love the satire and discourse of science fiction, the allegory of fantasy, and the romance of horror, and don’t care much what medium they get it from. Books, movies, table-top games…there are so many ways to explore this passion, and we’ve got some perfect socks to fit into that mix.
If you travel in genre-nerd circles at all, you’ve probably heard that a certain duo has returned to air-waves after over a decade, and is back to tackling alien invasions and untangling unexplainable happenings. Well, we’ve got a few socks to help you celebrate!
Of course, Science Fiction covers a lot of scenarios, races, and worlds, but its most known for its high-flying space adventures, and we’ve got plenty of items to evoke an intergalactic frame of mind.
And if you’re a fan of a certain famous space opera, you should definitely check out Stance’s line of Star Wars socks, which come in adult and kid sizes.
Looking for something a bit more down-to-earth? Here are some styles based on the magic of the Elements, which feature frequently in Fantasy stories. First from our Dreamer Socks line…
And also from the lovely Ozone…
And we even have a few socks to represent some of our favorite fantasy creatures!
Horror has bled (no pun intended) into fantasy and sci fi from the beginning. If classic horror is where your heart lies, we’ve got a few items that show that horror isn’t just for Halloween.
One of the things we love most about genre settings are the diverse, beautiful (and often devastating) worlds these stories inhabit. We’re going to end this line-up with a few items that evoke these worlds in our imagination, and hopefully they will spark something in yours.
