In our second edition of our Dreamer Dress Up competition we saw a lot of ingenuity in the way our dreamers took warm weather clothes and changed them into cold weather outfits with Sock Dreams socks and accessories. Here is a peak at our ten favorites, and what they had to say about their outfits.
These first two finalists were very nearly winners. We loved Jennifer’s bright colors during this sometimes drab season. Not only did she turn a summer party dress into a great fall outfit, but she kept a little hint of sunshine with her Extraordinary Radiant Rainbows. Lindsay’s autumn color choices were a big hit here at Sock Dreams. She kept warm in her spring mini dress with Signature Cotton Tights, O Dreamy Stockings (in a gorgeous color that we, unfortunately, no longer carry), and Harajuku Arm Warmers.
Our next set of finalists had fun with indoor shots. Han had this to say about her outfit, “I love layers and was laying around the house, desperately not wanting to put on outdoor clothes to go get food when the idea struck me: don’t change the leggings and tank you are wearing–just throw more stuff on top! This was the result.” She knocked it out of the park with Chevron Sleeves and Super Long Ribbed Leg Warmers. Alana was one of our first entries. She made her lace summer dress fall-ready with a long sleeved t-shirt and Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks. We loved what Whitney had to say about her outfit. “From keeping cool *eating ice cream* to staying cozy *dressed like a sundae*! I bundled up with layered long sleeves & hopped into Sock Dreams’ Neapolitan Stripes to keep my legs cozy.”
Jessica was used to staying warm in Alabama, when a cold wet spell hit. She couldn’t walk her dog in her usual clothing. Her solution? Extraordinary Striped Thigh Highs. Megan says, “Sweet lolita pastels are more commonly associated with Spring, but I like to be able to wear my whole lolita wardrobe year round! ” She used our Blue Knees in Pink to coordinate and keep her legs from getting chilled.
And here are our winners! Holly is loving the autumn in her Classic Tie Dyed Striped Knees and Basic Fingerless Gloves. Phoebe is looking cool while staying warm with her Chevron Sleeves and Floral Tights. Candis took her babies Magnolia and Camellia out to enjoy their first snow in her Tie-dye Bamboo OTKs and Bamboo Cable Tights. She kept their tiny toes warm with Picnic Plaid Baby Socks.
All of our finalists received a 10% off coupon code, and our three winners each received a $30 gift code. If you want a chance to win make sure you enter next month’s competition. November 11th, 2014
We’re just three weeks in to autumn, but we’re already preparing for the December holidays! Why? Because we’re offering free USPS First Class International Shipping until the end of November! This way our friends overseas can order holiday socks in time for them to travel and make it through customs, while enjoying the same free shipping that US residents enjoy all year round!
Of course, this means we’ve released our winter logo stickers early this year, for inclusion with holiday orders!
Our holiday logo lady is enjoying some hot cocoa while getting cozy in Peppermint Spiral Cotton OTKs to match the candy border, with Long Cuffable Leg Warmers layered over them for even more coziness!
Our winter logo sticker is sporting the same sock and legwarmer combo, only in different colors. She holds a snowglobe, and inside of that snowglobe is another logo lady, who is holding another snowglobe…. perhaps containing another logo lady?
To obtain a sticker of your very own, just leave an order note requesting either a holiday or winter logo sticker when you place your order!
Last year we paired socks up in romance novel-style covers, but this year our true love matches are between styles that make for great cold weather layering! It’s been chilly up here in the Northern hemisphere (resulting in snow in Portland, even!), and we’ve all been getting creative with pairing up socks.
I’ve mentioned layering here before, both pretty openwork styles to go over solid tights and lightweight layering options for spring, now let’s look at warm options that help keep you cozy by trapping warm air and just plain doubling up!
I’m a big arm warmer fan, so the first thing I do when it gets chilly is pair knit gloves with my old standby, the Harajuku Arm Warmers. And when the freeze gets really bitey, you don’t want to take your gloves off to use your mobile, so the Smart Gloves are super handy (ha, hand-y).
Also available in a lambswool version for folks who aren’t sensitive to wool (you lucky people!), both styles of Smart Gloves have a special fiber in the index finger tip and thumb, so you can still swipe your screen without freezing up! Stretchier styles like the Harajuku Arm Warmers and larger styles like the Leaf Pattern Fleece Arm Warmers go easily over knit gloves. Plus, their open-hand design allows you to pull them back a bit and take your gloves off when it gets too warm for gloves but not warm enough to expose your wrists to the elements.
But what about your toes?! Like I mentioned in the January Dreamer recommendations post, Zaf personally loves using the Silk Knee Highs as a liner sock under a warmer style. Not only does this trap air that helps keep you warm (like how a Thermos works, but with socks!), but if you’re sensitive to wool, a liner sock keeps those prickly fibers at a comfortable distance. The O Woolies are a great basic wool style that cuffs to make a fabulous knee high, so don’t worry about wool behind your knees!
Having a natural fiber against your skin is also a boon when wearing a purely man-made fiber like the Acrylic Slouches. I love my Acrylic Slouches, but if my feet start to sweat there is nowhere for the moisture to go. Silk and wool are both fabulous as liner fibers, because they help keep the moisture off your skin—and, as anyone who has worked themselves into a sweat in freezing weather knows, you start warm and then get cold fast! Coolmax® fiber is another wonderful wicking option, and though most of our Coolmax® styles, like the Sport Over the Calf Toe Sock, have toes, that’s just more snuggly layers keeping you warm!
Okay, sure, double up your socks, double up your gloves. But what if it is REALLY cold and you need to bring out the big guns? I will share my cold weather secret: double up your pants! But not like, with actual pants. Leggings can fit snugly under slacks and looser jeans, and if you go for fleece-lined styles like Foot Traffic’s Fleece Lined Leggings or the Thermo Fleece Lined Footless Tights, then you’ll really be barricading your legs against the chilly invaders of weather!
Layers! Pair those styles up, OTKs over tights, leg warmers over everything! Keep those toes cozy and share with us what your favourite layering combos are when the cold gets nasty and means business.
Unlike many residents of northern climate zones, we in Portland very rarely see snow, so when it actually sticks as it did last week, the city really shuts down. This is partially due to a lack of snow plows or experience driving in snow, but also because it’s such a rare occurrence that we all just want to take the day off & enjoy it!
Here at Sock Dreams we feel a deep responsibility for keeping everyone’s toes warm so we don’t give in and stay home easily — as long as our website is up, customers can keep placing orders so we do our darnedest to keep filling them and sending them off. For this reason we stayed open through three days of [Portland paralyzing] snow, closing only on Sunday after we were hit by freezing rain, making for some extra-dangerous driving (and walking!) conditions.
Don’t worry, though –we still got some work done, despite all the fun! On Monday we managed to get two days worth of packages out the door on schedule!
Yes, I’ve mentioned sparkly styles for the new year before, but what better time to bring in the bling than on this side of winter Solstice, waiting for the days to get longer and knowing that there’s still a lot of winter to come. Also: sparkles!!
For more subtle sparkle, these three styles knit only a bit of shimmer in leaving most of the yarn unadorned.
But if you’re feeling a bit more bold, the overall shimmer-sparkle of these two styles should be perfect
And if you just can’t shine brightly enough then put on your shades for these three:
But what if you’d like to indulge a bit less ostentatiously? Well, the Indulgences category has all of our pricer (and worth it!) options that you totally deserve after surviving the year. From knee highs in cashmere or silk,
To luxurious velvet,
And truly indulgent sheers.
You deserve something special, even if it’s just drinking in some sock-tastic beauty and adding it to your wishlist! Our year with you has been fabulous and it’s our awesome customers that keep us going, so thank you and here’s to 2014!
